Calling all boiler and pressure vessel operators! Labor & Industries is looking for a dedicated and experienced pressure vessel operator with a commitment to public safety. If this sounds like you read below to find out more!

We are looking for a Pressure Vessel Inspector 1to come on board and verify that all boilers and unfired pressure vessels installed in the state of Washington comply with the construction requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and are installed in accordance with the requirements of the state of Washington Boilers and Unfired Pressure Vessels Law (RCW 70.79 and ChapterWAC296104. You will be responsible for inspecting inservice boilers and unfired pressure vessels to ensure compliance with state laws and the National Board Inspection Code ensuring public safety to state of Washington.

As a Pressure Vessel Inspector 1 you will be part of our Boiler/Pressure Vessel Program within Labor and Industries. The program ensures public safety and is responsible for safety inspections and regulations of over 117000 boilers and pressure vessels located in the state of Washington.

Duties

Some of what you will do:


  • Verify that all boilers and unfired pressure vessels installed in this state comply with the construction requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and are installed in accordance with the requirements of the State of Washington Boiler and Unfired Pressure Vessel Laws RCW 70.79 and Chapter WAC 296104.
  • Inspect inservice boilers and unfired pressure vessels to ensure compliance with state laws and the National Board Inspection Code.
  • Verify for proper clearances safety valve operation/capacity proper operation of the boiler temperature and pressure controls accuracy of pressure gages and thermometers and proper operation of the low water cut off/low flow devices. Inspect boilers for proper welding and identifies any corrosion erosion pitting or cracking of boiler components.
  • Conduct internal inspections to verify condition of steam and mud drums tubes and combustion chambers/fireboxes. Verifies proper operation of fuel train.
  • Inspect inservice unfired pressure vessels for safe operation. Checks proper operation and stamping of safety devices. Verifies proper operation of control devices and accuracy of pressure gages and thermometers. Conducts external inspections to detect any deficiencies due to leakage corrosion erosion and any physical damage. Conducts internal inspections when required including ultrasonic testing for vessels 36 ID and under.
  • Identify any safety hazards/conditions on boilers and pressure vessels. Reports deficient conditions to owner and issues Red Tags for any unsafe boiler and/or pressure vessel until proper repairs or corrective action has been implemented.
  • Inspect repairs/alterations of inservice boilers and unfired pressure vessels to ensure compliance with state laws and the National Board Inspection Code. Witness any required pressure tests and inspects entire boiler and/or pressure vessel for leakage.
  • Follow up on all reported discrepancies and nonconformance to ensure that repairs and other corrective actions are in accordance with state law and the National Board Inspection Code. Notify Chief Inspector when there is a boiler and/or pressure vessel failure or an unsafe condition is found and the object is removed from service.
  • Communicate with stakeholders and customers on various aspects of the boiler law (inspections scheduling corrective actions noncompliance reports etc. and make recommendations to agency and civic groups regarding safety hazards associated with the operation of boilers and unfired pressure vessels and other aspect of the state law. Attend required technical and safety training as required.
  • Driving is required as part of this job. You will be required to travel and work in environments that have field or hazardous exposure. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required when visiting some job sites.

Qualifications

Required:


Four years of experience in the construction maintenance repair inspection or operation of highpressure boilers (high pressure is 15 psi of steam pressure) and unfired pressure vessels as a mechanical engineer steam engineer boilermaker or boiler inspector.


AND


A Certificate of Competency issued as a result of successful completion of the National Board requirements for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and passage of the WA State Boiler/Pressure Vessel Exam.


Candidate may also obtain the above referenced certification within the first 180 days of employment.


To obtain the referenced certification the candidate must be able to meet the qualification requirements as listed in The National Board rules for commissioned inspectors NB263 (RCI1 for Inservice (IS) commission as referenced in Table 1.

For this position telework is dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station for this position is Kennewick Washington.
