Job Title: Summer Day Camp Counselor
Purpose: Counselors are responsible for preparing teaching and carrying out activities while guiding students in their personal growth and daily living skills. They must supervise students ensuring proper attention to health happiness discipline and safety.
Reports to: K8 Program Coordinators
Job Category: Full time Seasonal
Rate of Pay: $18/hour
Duration: June 16th 20th planning and orientation will likely be fewer than 8 hours/day; COL closed for Juneteenth; June 23rd August 1st (day camp dates)
Monday Friday 8:00 AM 4:00 PM no more than 40 hours/week
Job Functions:
- Arrive on time and prepared to lead daily instruction.
- Lead assigned lessons and activities appropriate for assigned groups/grade levels; gather and organize necessary materials for each activity.
- E.g.: STEM related activities arts and craft activities physical activities are all elements of a typical summer camp day
- Communicate with supervisors regarding ordering of any and all activity materials in a timely manner e.g. not waiting until the day before the materials are before communicating a need).
- Understand and enthusiastically instruct participating students in the curriculum and activities.
- Be willing and able to work with all students in grades K8.
- Supervise meals and any other time designated for socializing.
- Potential need for helping to heat/serve food
- Ensure trash is properly disposed of every day
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students throughout the duration of the summer.
- Be willing and able to share any concerns with Program Coordinators IMMEDIATELY
- Supervise students at all times including during offsite excursions
- Abide by all Center of Life policies and procedures.
- Be a positive role model for all students throughout the duration of summer including all meetings and activities.
- Set an example for kids by participating in all activities regardless of who is leading them
- Be aware of each childs diverse needs.
- Collaborate with your coworker(s) to ensure that the learning environment of the room is as impactful to the students as possible.
- Lead by example by displaying a positive enthusiastic kind caring and supportive attitude and behavior towards all children parents and peers.
- Transition all students from indoor to outdoor activities meals to activities etc.
- Collaborate with all community enrichment partners (such as Reading is Fundamental) to manage student behavior and maintain position as a student role model.
- Display a positive and enthusiastic conduct towards the delivery of activities while also encouraging children to participate.
- Build strong healthy relationships with children that inspire engagement in activities and community connectedness.
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
- Participate enthusiastically in all Center of Life and daily meetings.
- Participate as a member of the Center of Life staff to deliver and supervise special events or campassociated functions.
- Participate with all staff in maintaining the cleanliness and order of the teaching space.
Qualifications:
- Must be of 18 years of age or older
- Must obtain State Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint and National Sex Offender Registry clearances as well as provide proof of Mandated Reporter Training; CPR training
- Must possess the ability to effectively communicate with children ages 412 while also providing necessary instruction to students
- Must be able to provide adequate supervision and support to multiple kids at a time
- Must possess strength and endurance to maintain constant supervision of students
- Be aware that the physical requirements of the job include being on your feet most of the day walking up and down numerous staircases and walking throughout the (hilly) Hazelwood neighborhood
- Be aware that most indoor activity spaces are unfortunately not air conditioned
- Must be able to escort/walk students to local playgrounds while ensuring their safety
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Education OR a Bachelors degree in any field
- Minimum of two years of experience in the realm of education e.g. within a classroom or other formal youth development/teaching/education arena)
- Formal teaching experience within a classroom setting OR experience as a camp counselor in a role that required you to plan and write activities
- Formal teaching and/or education training e.g. minor in Education or collegelevel courses taken)
- Behavior specialist or Counselor experience/education/etc.
