The Opportunity

WSDOT Eastern Region (ER) is currently seeking two Highway Maintenance Worker 1s for the Rest Areas in Adams County WA. This position is responsible for performing routine rest area maintenance to include janitorial services facility maintenance and landscaping activities at our Schrag Sprague Hatton Telford and Keller Ferry Rest Areas. The incumbent must possess a willingness to work any shift often for long hours on short notice including weekends and holidays. This position requires a selfdirected individual who takes independent action to resolve maintenance problems as they occur. Our ideal candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service when responding to inquiries and complaints from the traveling public.


What to Expect

A typical schedule is 5/8hour shifts. Hours are typically 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM subject to overtime as needed. The employee will travel in a stateowned vehicle to the respective rest areas that they are assigned.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Highway Maintenance Worker will:

  • Perform a variety of janitorial services at highway rest areas including but not limited to cleaning disinfecting replenishing supplies sweeping and mopping floors.
  • Keep soap toilet paper and seat cover dispensers full empty trash containers.
  • Take water samples monthly.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances.
  • Maintain landscaped areas by mowing (riding and push mowers) trimming and pruning of trees and shrubbery weeding flower and shrub beds.
  • Service and maintain lawn mower gas trimmer leaf blower and irrigation system.
  • Remove litter and debris in and around rest areas and highways.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with traveling public daily.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:

  • Valid drivers license
  • First aid card or obtain within 6 months of hire date.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel to the respective rest areas.
  • A highlevel of awareness to safety.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • One 1 year of experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work.
