Job Description

The Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgerys Gastrointestinal Surgery division functions as an independent healthcare provider who working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients in the Gastrointestinal Surgery Clinic. Performs direct patient care including pre and postoperative surgical management and management of acute and chronic diseases common in Gastrointestinal Surgery. Responsible for assessment diagnosis treatment management education health promotion and care coordination for patients and families with acute and chronic Gastrointestinal Surgery health needs.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assures clinical competency and expertise in Gastrointestinal Surgery. Follows universal precautions.
  • Functions independently and/or as a member of a multidisciplinary team to plan deliver and evaluate health care for Gastrointestinal Surgery patient population.
  • Procedures in accordance with privileging process to be directed by patient care needs.
  • Develop and implement outpatient treatment plan with the multidisciplinary team including admissions pre and postoperative management and procedures.
  • Provide anticipatory guidance counseling and education to patients and their families about vascular conditions and surgical procedures. Educates APPs residents medical students and nursing staff regarding treatment plans.
  • Documents patient assessment plan of care and treatment progress in the medical record. Writes admission history physical and clinic notes in an accurate and concise manner with documentation for appropriate billing.
  • Collaborate with Gastrointestinal Surgery physicians APPs and administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with faculty staff residents students and the public.
  • Evaluate and interpret pertinent lab and imaging studies.
  • Participates in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
  • Contributes toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals as delegated.
  • Participates in activities that enhance clinical expertise.

Percent of Time: 100

Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 may vary based on the operational needs of the Department.

Location: UI Health Care Medical Center University Campus

Pay Grade: 11
