Position Information


Charge Ahead: Become a Lead Line Electrician and Illuminate Your Future!

The Department of Facility Maintenance Public Building and Electrical Maintenance has 6 vacancies for Lead Line Electrician. Under the general supervision of the Line Electrician Supervisor and the Street Lighting Operations Supervisor this position:
  • Plans assigns and supervises the work of a crew engaged in the installation maintenance and repair of the Citys underground and overhead transmission lines and appurtenances.
  • Reads and interprets street and electrical lighting plans to determine supply needs and to facilitate location of meters and junction boxes switch gear time switches control equipment and underground lines.
  • Oversees and when necessary instructs journeymen and trades apprentices assigned to the crew in proper methods of work safe work practices use of instruments in testing equipment proper use of tools and other equipment the crew uses to complete repair and replacements of nonfunctioning electrical equipment in the outdoor park mall parking lot lighting systems and street lighting.
  • Operates a vehicle adhering to federal state and city rules regulations guidelines and safety practices for CDL drivers.
  • Performs job hazard analyses to ensure identification of job hazards and safety of work procedures
  • Performs maintenance installation testing analyzing calibration or repairing of electronic electrical and electronic mechanical equipment and devices.
  • Performs other related work.

Special Work Requirements:
  • Exposure to electricity including arc flash.
  • Exposure to highvoltage (up to 12500V) high tension wires and equipment.
  • Falls from poles ranging in height from 30 feet to 110 feet.
  • Exposure to hazardous traffic conditions while working with live wires and cables on congested streets and roadways making repairs day or night in adverse weather conditions.
  • Subject to call 24hours a day including Saturdays Sundays and holidays including emergency response to motor vehicle accidents downed wires and other emergency conditions.
  • Required to perform standby duty when assigned.
  • Work with sodiumfilled and fluorescent lamps which may explode and cause serious burns physical discomfort and possible blindness.
  • Climbing of wood poles (heights of 25 feet to 55 feet) with pole gaffs.
  • Climbing of metal poles with rungs (heights up to 100 feet).
  • Working at heights of 25 feet to 100 feet in an aerial bucket.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • This position serves as a Disaster Response Worker and sometimes requires working beyond the normal workday on weekends as necessary to meet schedules and deadlines.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a noncitizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show demonstrated competence in performing the journey level duties of a Line Electrician.

Applicable Skills:


LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Possession of a valid Hawaii State Journey Worker Electrician (EJ) license at the time of application.
  2. Possession of a valid State of Hawaii Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B with Air Brakes at the time of application.
  3. Current State Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examination Certificate at the time of application.
  4. State of Hawaii Hoisting Machine Operators Certification prior to completion of probation.
  5. Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator prior to completion of probation.
  6. Forklift Certification type 5 prior to completion of probation.
