Job Description

Job Summary

*This is a temporary hourly up to three years benefited appointment.*

Reporting to the Associate Director of Architectural Trades and Auto Shop and under the lead direction of the Lead Painter the painter independently or collaboratively performs skilled journeylevel painting and finishing using brush roll spray and electrostatic methods. Duties include hanging paper; mixing and matching paints; sand and water blasting; erecting scaffolding or rigging; painting signs and roadway markings; selecting and storing materials; inspecting work for code compliance; reviewing contractor work; estimating project costs and timelines; maintaining paint shop operations; cleaning tools and equipment; following safety procedures; maintaining a safe workspace; and using manual or computerized systems to track work and prepare reports.

The Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides maintenance and operations services to a university campus spread across multiple sites comprised of 167 acres 81 buildings and more than six million gross square feet. The Architectural Trades & Auto Services Unit is one of the nine total shops in the Maintenance & Operations Unit and is comprised of a Facilities Project Supervisor Lead Painter four Painters who report up through the Senior Director and Maintenance & Operations who provides supervision oversight and guidance. Additionally the Shop employs temporary Painters on a seasonal basis to support the needs of the campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply under coats and finish coats using the full range of application methods including brush roll spray and electrostatic spray
  • Paint signs and parking lot/roadway markings
  • Advise in the selection and storage of painting materials
  • Inspect related work performed by contractors
  • Estimate cost time and materials for painting projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of a paint shop
  • Clean and maintain painting and finishing materials tools and equipment used in the performance of duties
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized recordkeeping systems.
  • Prepare standard reports and consult and work with other trades workers.
  • Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as paint thinners lead and asbestos
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods materials tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting finishing drywall and paperhanging
  • Uses protective equipment as required for personal safety
  • Maintain inventory and records order parts and supplies

  • Ability to read interpret and work from blueprints plans drawings and specifications

  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semiskilled assistants
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner

Required Qualifications

  • Must possess those abilities normally acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journeylevel skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painters apprenticeship program
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

License

A valid drivers license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California drivers license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position and follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety
  • Achievement of journeylevel skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painters apprenticeship program
  • Knowledge of the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California
  • Possession of a current California lead abatement worker certification
  • Two years of journeylevel experience in the painting trade
  • Experience working in a large commercial or public agency setting

Compensation

Classification: Painter
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5462/month $6400/month
CSU Salary Range: $6076/month $7766/month
