Department Background

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purposedriven science and Cornell Universitys second largest college. This position is within the Cornell Lab of Ornithologya vibrant unit within CALS. The Cornell Lab is the worlds leading resource for conservation research education and participatory science focused on birds and houses the Center for Engagement in Science and Nature (CESN). CESN activates and supports people worldwide to connect with birds and nature participate in science and promote the wellbeing of humans and natural systems. Our model for change is to bring curiosity to scale through education and participatory science so that together we can gain insight into how natural systems work and address global conservation challenges. This position is member of CESNs Youth and Community Engagement team which focuses on formal and informal education as well as community engagement across the hemisphere.

Position Summary

While position responsibilities vary every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative collaborative open and welcoming; showing respect compassion and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

The Engagement Coordinator assists the Youth and Community Engagement Leader by conceptualizing designing and developing educational materials leading workshops and webinars and developing partnerships and networks as well as representing the Cornell Lab at state regional and national education conferences. The Coordinator manages sponsorship relationships as well as recruits and trains a network of Educator Ambassadors. The Ambassador network is a group of dedicated educators who disseminate resources to educators via their local and state channels. Meet project deadlines working under the guidance Youth and Community Engagement Leader and with the project team.

Annual term appointment with possibility of renewal based upon performance and availability of funding.

This is a fulltime position at 100 FTE. This is a oneyear term appointment that is contingent upon available work funding and performance.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role remotely up to 2 days per week and onsite at least 3 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify suspend revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement.

Visa Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

What You Need (Required Qualifications)

  • Associates degree and 2 to 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in educational outreach (formal or informal) and/or community engagement.

  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to present workshops and webinars for a broad range of people.

  • Strong writing proofreading and editing skills and the ability to integrate graphics into educational materials.

  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are critical as is ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Able to work quickly and efficiently under general supervision.

  • Must have experience with computer applications such as MS Excel MS Word PowerPoint Adobe Google Suite etc.

  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS drivers license and be cleared to drive for university business.

  • Effectively use judgment to prioritize and accomplish tasks.

  • Bachelors degree in science or science education. Knowledge of nature connection participatory science and/or science inquiry highly preferred. Teaching writing and webpage editing experience. Spanish language skills a plus.
