Job Description

The Library and Media Specialist supports a dynamic studentcentered environment that promotes digital literacy independent learning and equitable access to information and technology. Under the direction of the building principal this role manages the daily operations of the media center supports instructional staff facilitates student use of digital and print resources and ensures the center operates as a hub for learning creativity and begins August 2025.

This position goes beyond traditional library services incorporating educational technology media production tools and instructional support into its responsibilities.

Building Principal / Superintendent or designee

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Oregon teaching license.
  • Must hold or be actively working toward a Library Media Endorsement (LME) recognized by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).
  • Bachelors degree in Education Library Science or a related field required; Masters degree in Library and Information Science preferred.
  • Experience working with K12 students in an educational or library setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in educational technology digital tools and information literacy practices.
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers students and families to support instructional and enrichment needs.
  • Competence in managing digital and physical collections using library management systems and supporting research and inquirybased learning.
  • Capacity to lift and move materials up to 30 pounds and perform duties involving extended periods of standing or walking.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operations of the Media & Learning Center including the physical and digital collection student use and scheduling.
  • Support students and staff in the effective and ethical use of digital tools databases online learning platforms and emerging technologies.
  • Assist with digital citizenship information literacy and research instruction.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot multimedia equipment including video cameras audio equipment tablets interactive displays and classroom presentation tools.
  • Provide technical and instructional support for digital projects presentations and collaborative workspaces.
  • Supervise media center assistants and student aides.
  • Curate and maintain an inclusive collection of print and digital materials aligned to curriculum needs and student interests.
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify organize and prepare materials that enhance instruction across content areas.
  • Monitor student activity in the center modeling and promoting positive behaviors that support a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Create engaging relevant and timely displays to highlight student work celebrate authors and promote literacy and exploration.
  • Maintain accurate circulation and inventory records using a library management system.
  • Assist students in locating evaluating and citing sources across print and digital platforms.
  • Coordinate flexible space usage to support instruction group work maker activities and presentations.
  • Support staff in using learning tools such as Google Workspace Canvas Canva and multimedia creation apps.
  • Facilitate access to instructional media including ebooks audiobooks and streaming content.
  • Develop routines and procedures for smooth operation and scheduling of the center.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring the centers annual budget and purchasing materials or resources as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all district state and federal policies.

About the District:

The Hermiston School District is the largest district in eastern Oregon exceeding 5600 students in grades kindergarten through 12 with the mission of serving the needs of all children with rigorous program choices high expectations mutual respect and excellence. The school district includes a 912 senior high school two 68 middle schools currently five K5 elementary schools six with the addition of LVES and a robust online learning program option for students and families.

Support for the school district has been strong from the community. In 2019 voters approved an $82.7 million building project which includes replacement of Rocky Heights Elementary construction of an additional elementary school (Loma Vista) and a multiclassroom annex of the high school along withvarious districtwide renovations. The voters also approved a $69.9 million bond in 2008. whichserved to replace Armand Larive Middle School West Park Elementary and Sunset Elementary schools.

The District employs over 630 full time staff that includes approximately 365 teachers and over 265 classified support and supervisory personnel making it one of the largest employers in the city of Hermiston. A nationallyrecognized community that embraces its diversity the district serves some 28000 residents where onethird of the population is Hispanic.

The school district prides itself on the academic achievement of its students successful athletic programs nationallyrecognized club and activity organizations and its exhaustive list of academic and elective opportunities available to students. The Districts partnership with community organizations has been central to its continued success highlighted by support groups who have provided nearly a half a million dollars to assist students and programs through such venues as the Hermiston Sports Booster Club Hermiston Education Foundation Band Boosters FFA Alumni and the community sponsorship of the student homebuilding program to name a few.

About the Community:

The city of Hermiston is a vibrant and growing community ofapproximately 18000 residents located at the crossroads of the Pacific Northwest situated near the intersectionofI84 and I82 just minutes from a ColumbiaRiver port and 30 minutes from the TriCities in Washington. Hermiston and the entire Umatilla County area have excellent potential for growth in commercial industrial agricultural as well as residential development. Hermiston boasts over 100 acres for community use volleyball courts soccer fields baseball diamonds childrens play areas barbeque and picnic areas and more. Located within 10 minutes of downtown Hermiston both Umatilla and Echo have challenging golf courses. The Columbia River offers tournament level fishing as well as many water sports including swimming wind surfing and boating. Other fishing waters include the Umatilla River Cold Springs Reservoir and many ponds. Nearby is Hat Rock State Park and the Blue Mountains are within an hour drive affording a wide variety of fishing hunting and camping activities. In the winter the mountains are home to excellent snow skiing tubing snowmobiling and sledding.

Salary and Benefits:The Hermiston School District offers an extremely competitivesalary and benefits package which includes PERS retirement employerpaid pickup tuition reimbursementand a comprehensive health and benefits package. Afull year contract consists of 193 days which includes 3 paid holidays. The Library Media Specialist will work and be paid 10 additional days beyond the 193 days.
