Job Summary/Scope Responsible for managing the City Prosecutors Office including staffing coordination; case initiation filing and prosecution within the Municipal Division of the Circuit Court of Buchanan County; handling appeals from the Municipal Division to the Circuit Court and the Court of Appeals; coordinating with Municipal Judge and Municipal Court Clerk staff members to orderly process cases; and work with members of the public to resolve pending cases. Limited budgetary responsibilities. Supervises support staff.
Supervisory Responsibility Integral to the position of City Prosecutor is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching training guiding evaluating correcting and if necessary disciplining.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Manages and Supervises City Prosecutors Office and provides supervision and daily oversight of staff members in accordance with City policies procedures and applicable laws including planning assigning and directing work training addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Identifies and coordinates with substitute prosecutors to ensure representation of the City in municipal and circuit court and appellate courts.
- Coordinates with the Municipal Judge and Municipal Court clerk staff to ensure cases are processed in an orderly and efficient manner.
- Reviews police reports complaints and allegations regarding violations of the City Code of Ordinances and files charges if appropriate.
- Prepares subpoenas and summonses for persons charged as well as witnesses required for litigation.
- Meets with police officers code enforcement officers attorneys and members of the public as required to discuss evidence and case dispositions.
- Evaluates and pursues claims for restitution.
- Conducts trials and participates in disposition of cases filed in the Municipal Court including arraignments and court appeals.
- Handles appeals to the Buchanan County Circuit Court the Western District Court of Appeals and potentially the Supreme Court of Missouri.
- Provides oversight for cases in which the Municipal Court orders suspended imposition or sentences or deferred sentences.
- Provides legal advice to City staff members related to criminal and quasicriminal violations and various matters affecting Municipal Court.
- Consults with members of the public regarding pending municipal citations.
- Provides assistance in the training of law enforcement offices and code enforcement officials.
- Reviews requests for dismissal of parking tickets and DETERMINES disposition.
- Enforces the City Code of Ordinances by process of reviewing charges filing complaints and coordinating enforcement actions.
- Reviews ordinances and makes revisions as necessary.
- Maintains appropriate records and filing system.
- Consults on issues related to Municipal Court as requested.
- Maintains a good working relationship with the Municipal Judge consisting of mutual trust and respect.
Other Duties and Responsibilities Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- License to practice law in Missouri.
- Skills in effective communication and negotiation.
- Skills in trial techniques and case management.
- Knowledge of City Code of Ordinances.
- Knowledge of Missouri State Statutes as well as general police procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Valid drivers license.
- One to three years of experience in trial practice.
Material and Equipment Directly Used Uses a variety of office equipment including a personal computer with a variety of software programs and other standard officerelated equipment. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements Work is performed in an office or court setting with a controlled environment. Occasional need to perform field visits to compile information for litigation purposes. Work may involve extended periods of sitting or standing bending reaching and stooping. Seldom need to lift more than 10 to 20 pounds. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
Education Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school required.
