Job Title: Paraprofessional I/IA Classification: Classified
Reports To: Building Administrator/Certified Professional
Position Code:
Assist certified professionals in providing a beneficial learning environment in which all
students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource
materials.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalency
Completion of either 48 hours of college class credit or a passing score on the
Paraprofessional test.
Child Development Associates Degree if working in a Head Start environment
Conscientiously accept and follow directions
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Exhibit sound judgment
Adapt to a variety of situations
Fundamental understanding of students and the learning process
Ability to successfully accomplish/complete any annual inservice training
Some positions will require specialized qualifications such as expertise with the piano
skill in physical education knowledge of the outdoors/nature and hiking and non
English language fluency
Essential Functions:
Assist classroom teachers in daily instruction and training and participate in daily and
longrange classroom/lesson activity planning
Conduct learning exercises and tutor small groups or individual students to assist
students in achieving their individual educational objectives
Help maintain organized work and study environments
Under the teachers direction evaluate work of students and record/chart student
data
Assist with supervision of students including monitoring students when the teacher is
otherwise occupied serve as a source of information to substitute teachers assigned to
the classroom and provide escort and assistance to students as assigned
Maintain ethical and confidential behavior about the students learning environment
and school
Other Job Functions:
Communicate effectively with patrons and students
Alert teachers to special needs of individual students
Assist with supervision of students during emergency drills assemblies field trips
lunch and recreation periods
Help students with selfcare duties and routines
Perform related clerical functions such as telephoning typing reproducing and
greeting visitors
Set up equipment for class work
Collect and display suitable materials in educational displays
Operate and care for equipment
Distribute and collect materials used for instruction
Conduct inventories
Interpret language (English and nonEnglish) for students educators patrons and the
like
Participate in all Professional Development and InService training programs
Performance Responsibilities:
Instructional responsibilities will be AS ASSIGNED by the certified supervisor with some
assignments requiring a specialized skill. The list below has a variety of expectations which
may be assigned.
Listed below are a variety of locations. Each para will be assigned in one or more working
environment(s).
Work with an individual student throughout the day
Work as a team member (composed of paras and certified professionals) with a group
of students throughout the day

The incumbent may be required to use the following requirements during any part of the
working day:

temperament ability to work with a variety of problems at the same time stamina for
working long hours and in stress producing environments.
