SUMMARY:To provide interpreting services for individuals with hearing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides educational social and informational interpreting services for the deaf and hearing impaired to facilitate communication between those who can hear and those who are deaf or hearing impaired.
- Tutors hearing impaired students utilizing a variety of forms of nonverbal and voice communications.
- Reviews prepares and becomes familiar with subject matter vocabulary and terms to prepare for upcoming classes.
- Researches information to prepare for special assemblies concerts plays and/or field trips.
- Uses a variety of modalities and electronic devices such as closed captioning hearing aids and assistive listening devices and telecommunications equipment to enhance the understanding of the information being interpreted.
- Coordinates with other staff members providing services to students.
- Establish and maintain good rapport with students employees community members and vendors.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Other job related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Completion of an Interpreter Training Program AND one 1 year of providing instructional interpretation in a school environment.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid CPR First Aid certification.
- Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Principles of sign language interpretation practices methods and techniques.
- Demonstrating fluency in sign language interpretation in a variety of educational materials and activities.
- Applicable federal state and local laws codes regulations and Dysart Unified School District policies and procedures.
- Adding subtracting multiplying and dividing in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.
- Reading and interpreting general documents such as employee handbooks and safety/training manuals.
- Standard practices methods and materials of assigned work.
- Customer service principles.
- Modern office technology.
SKILL IN:
- Interpreting a wide variety of educational instructional and social conversations.
- Performing basic original research.
- Maintaining confidentiality.
- Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.
- Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers supervisors the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching standing walking fingering grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.
Light Work: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions: Work is routinely performed in an indoor classroom environment.
