Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Student Worker in the department of Physical and Life Sciences.

The INBRE Summer Undergraduates Research Fellowship (iSURF) at Nevada State University engages students who are considering post graduate or research careers in graduatelevel research experience and professional development guided by faculty over an eighttotenweek period in the summer.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Commitment to full time work 40 per week).
  • Enter time worked daily and accurately in Workday.
  • Conduct full time research on a chosen/assigned research topic.
  • Participation in all of the program activities including projectspecific daily research activities weekly seminars and workshops journal club and other activities.
  • Completion of research project and presentation at a research poster symposium held in SeptemberOctober.

Laboratory Safety Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Attend laboratory safety orientation and complete laboratory safety topics certifications before starting research in the lab.
  • Comply with all program rules and and requirements.
  • Conduct mentored research with integrity.
  • Respect all laboratory safety rules and conduct research responsibly in a way that promotes safety in the laboratory.
  • Understand the hazards protective measures and controls involved in your experiment and use related material safety data sheet for guidance and lab safety protocols to ensure safety of yourself and others.
  • Respect your peers and faculty in the lab.

Skills:

  • Take initiative and seek support to learn research and lab techniques needed to complete research project.
  • Selfmotivated with high level of responsibility to plan and execute research experiments in a timely manner and make significant progress on a research project.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Selfmotivated to learn and develop laboratory techniques and skills.
  • Selfmotivated to learn new software and new research techniques as needed.
  • Flexibility in adjusting to new research methods and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Well organized and strong note taking skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Must be enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current semester at Nevada State.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employmentrelated visas).
  • Has a preliminary acceptance to the upcoming 2025 INBRE summer research program at Nevada State.
  • Not yet earned a bachelors degree at Nevada State or elsewhere in a STEM field.
  • Not graduating in Spring 2025.
  • Enrolled or plan to enroll at Nevada State for the following Fall semester by the start of the iSURF summer program.
  • Not hold other employment during the iSURF program period.
  • Not enrolled in 2025 summer coursework.

Please note:Applicants must meet the posted minimum qualifications at the time of application in order to be considered for the position.

Work Hours:

Monday through Friday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM. This position is contingent upon funding and once funded the maximum hours allowed is 337 hours.

Hourly Rate:

$17.80 per hour.
