The University of Hawaii at Hilo is the most diverse fouryear public university in the United States located in a geographically diverse and mixeduse island community. The UH Hilo School of Education has served as a resource to area educators for decades teaching in a culturally rich and diverse setting and conducts as well as guides action research to expand knowledge of teaching and learning providing highquality integrated inquiry and placebased undergraduate and graduate programs.


The successful candidate will play a key role in the newly established Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education Studies program at UH Hilo contributing to curriculum development program implementation and student mentorship. This program is designed to prepare future educators with a strong foundation in culturally responsive pedagogy placebased learning and community engagement aligning with the educational needs of Hawaiis diverse K5 student population.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach undergraduate campusbased and webbased courses in Elementary Education graduate courses in other educationrelated areas as needed and assigned
  2. Advise students
  3. Supervise teacher candidates in schools
  4. Engage in curriculum development program assessment and accreditation
  5. Engage in scholarly work and publication
  6. Perform service to the institution and discipline
  7. Engage in partnerships with schools education agencies outofschooltime (OST) programs and the Hawaii Department of Education


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment
  2. A minimum of three years of K5 classroom teaching experience
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach preservice elementary teacher education courses
  4. Demonstrated ability to teach preservice elementary courses in mathematics or literacy
  5. Evidence of the ability to establish a productive research agenda.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Evidence of successful experience in working with various K5 schools in Hawaii or other schools with diverse populations
  2. Successful experience with school accreditation program evaluation or data teams
  3. Successful experience working with preservice elementary teachers in mathematics or literacy
  4. Experience mentoring coaching or supervising students
  5. Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy and/or placebased teaching.
