The Olympic Region of the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is actively seeking aForest Crew Supervisor Correctional Facilityat the Olympic Camp. The duty station is at the Olympic Corrections Center approximately 27 miles south of Forks WA. Outdoor recreational activities here are plentiful and include fishing hunting cycling mountain biking hiking skiing and snowboarding to name only a few. Mountains and the coast are here for you to explore.

This entrylevel position supports the activities at the Olympic Camp. Duties of this position include supervision of up to ten adult incarcerated individuals performing precommercial thinning tree planting litter pickup wildland fire suppression forest road maintenance recreation site maintenance and other forestryrelated jobs. The primary emphasis will be on providing leadership to the crew providing for crew and public safety while leading and training an incarcerated individual forestry crew. Travel is required during fire season and other emergency responses.

Duties

Responsibilities:
This position requires constant decisionmaking regarding the crews safety. It also requires decisions with regard to crew placement and may require the Forest Crew Supervisor to make decisions regarding the quality of the work being performed. Decisions are made continually regarding the motivation and cohesiveness of the incarcerated individual crew members.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in some or all of the following forest crafts which include: forest seedling planting forest plantation vegetation management precommercial thinning recreation trail and facilities construction and maintenance chainsaw use and maintenance hand tool use and maintenance and wildland fire suppression.
    OR technical/professional forestry knowledge and skills which are acquired through the completion of a 2 or 4year degree in forest management or a closely related field program or study.
  • Six months of supervisory experience either in an adult/juvenile correctional environment or a professional productionbased business.
  • Supervisory experience in a diverse work setting that is centered on safety and security.
  • Possess the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing using common technology.
  • Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity equity inclusion and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • FCSs typically work in various outdoor settings such as forested areas wildland urban interface areas desert basalt and scabland settings.
  • Must have the physical ability to traverse all uneven terrain.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in and on DOC institutional grounds.
  • Must be able to operate a 12person dual fourwheel drive vehicle on improved roadways and offroad settings.
  • Drive time may exceed 1 hour each way with occasional drive times up to 10 hours may be required during emergency response.
  • A valid unrestricted drivers license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of this position a NCIC Background Investigation will be conducted on successful candidates.
  • During the first year of employment successful candidates must attain the level of FF2 by passing guard school in which S130 S190 S212 and L180 are taught.
  • During the second year of employment employees must attend and pass the S131 FF1 class and work towards completion of the FF1 task book.
  • Upon Completion of the FF1 task book employees are expected to work towards IC5 certification and Single ResourceCrew Boss certification.
  • Must pass the arduous work capacity test annually which consists of carrying a 45pound pack three miles in under fortyfive minutes.
  • Maintains valid FirstAID CPR and AED card.
  • Attend any offered trainings pass trailer towing training and maintain or stay current with all requirements pertaining to this position.

    • Recreation trail and facilities construction and maintenance
    • Operating a vehicle on forest roads
    • Microsoft Suite
  • Work experience that demonstrates:

    • Professionalism
  • Technical / Professional knowledge skills and licenses:
    • Current pesticide applicator license in Washington State including Laws and Safety Right of Way Agricultural and Aquatics endorsements (or the ability to obtain)
    • Red Card Qualification of any Single Resource Boss (preferably Crew Boss)
    • A 2 or 4year collegelevel course of study in natural resources fire science or other applicable field
