Job Description

This role is part of GEGACs multidisciplinary team who works collaboratively creating safe healing spaces for local Aboriginal community in accordance with the SEWB way of Knowing Doing and Being.

This role involves assessing the social needs of individuals families and groups to assist and empower them to develop and use the strengths and resources to resolve issues affecting their social and emotional health and wellbeing. Furthermore you will provide a social justice and human rights lens in partnership with the individual seeking SEWB support to address personal difficulties and structural barriers in their lives. This will be done through a number of interventions including one to one counselling group facilitation community development advocacy and case management.

Organisational Profile

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff GEGAC is a NotforProfit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health Social Services Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the selfdetermination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social emotional and spiritual wellbeing with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The purpose of this role is to assess the social needs of individuals families and groups to assist and empower them to develop and use the strengths and resources needed to resolve issues affecting their social and emotional health and wellbeing. Furthermore the social worker will provide a social justice and human rights lens in partnership with the individual seeking SEWB support to address personal difficulties and structural barriers in their lives.

This will be done through a number of interventions including one to one counselling group facilitation community development advocacy and case management.

Key Selection Criteria

A sound knowledge and understanding of intergenerational challenges faced by Aboriginal families.

A sound knowledge of the social and emotional wellbeing framework.

Experience in counselling and case management including intake & assessment and brief intervention work.

Sound communication writing and computer skills.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively as part of a team.

Demonstrate knowledge of cultural respect and apply this to practice.

Experience working with Aboriginal community experiencing SEWB issues.

Has a sound knowledge of social work practice and relevant theories such as systems theory. Psychosocial development theory ecological systems theory empowerment theory and antioppressive practice.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

Social work qualification degree or equivalent ESSENTIAL

Valid drivers licence ESSENTIAL

A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL

A person of Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE

Proof of COVID19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
