The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an enthusiastic careerminded individual who want to make a difference and join our dynamic team at our Everett Maintenance Facility supporting the vast transportation infrastructure for WSDOTs Northwest Washington as part of our Mitigation Crew. This intraining position offers a career path handson learning and mentorship allowing you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series This position is perfect for someone who loves working with their hands knowing their work is done on roadways and roadsides in a variety of weather. The successful candidates will perform a variety of skilled tasks including landscape maintenance plant care and other environmental needs. This team member will assist with the maintenance and operations of the state highways and adjacent right of ways to assure they remain in a condition that promotes the movement of traffic and safety to the motoring public.

Working in the maintenance area will require responsible safetyminded individuals to accomplish skilled tasks that require operating trucks and various other highway and heavy equipment. These positions require a quick response time to job sites. Highway maintenance crews are ready 24 hours a day seven days a week. By taking on this role you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Performs skilled and semiskilled landscape maintenance on roadside and mitigation sites including applying pesticide and fertilizer applications.
  • Remove or cut trees and brush; manage vegetation through planting and transplanting stream restoration and stabilization fencing irrigation setup and operation pruning mowing minor grading wildlife habitat structure construction erosion control and general grounds care.
  • Stay proficient on the latest Environmental Safety Act (ESA) and Best Management Practices and implement them in all aspects of work. Operate Class A B or C highway equipment.
  • Routinely and safely operate Vactors sweepers hydraulic excavators backhoes booms and cranes asphalt boxes bulldozers road graders chain saws and eaters.
  • Performs manual labor to complete activities such as asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair applying concrete asphalt and synthetic materials.
  • Conduct drainage maintenance and repair.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1level the following are required:

  • High school graduation or GED.

AND

  • One 1 year of experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work such as highway maintenance logging farming excavation trucking heavy equipment experience or other related work experience. Note: Education from a trade school may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis
  • Must obtain Washington State CDL Class A drivers license with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment.


To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2level the following are required:

  • Two 2 years of highway maintenance logging farming excavation heavy equipment experience or other related work experience.

OR

  • One 1 year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

AND

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A drivers license with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction with valid medical card.


In addition (applies to both levels):

  • Ability to manipulate and transport 50 lbs. in a safe manner.
  • Valid drivers license


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Possess an unrestricted Class A CDL with N endorsement without air brake restriction & valid medical card to legal operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification.
  • Crane Certificate.
