- The incumbent in this position provides a full range of police services for the Orleans Levee District by enforcing federal state and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The Police Sergeant supervises police officers on his assigned watch. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level i.e. Police Lieutenant and/or Police Captain.

Orleans Levee District Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of law enforcement experience.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of a current Louisiana drivers license.
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.Job Concepts

To oversee a full range of police services on an assigned shift with primary emphasis on the enforcement of laws investigation of crimes and accidents and providing emergency services and crime prevention programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a higherlevel police official. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct over Police Officers 1 2 and 3.
LOCATION OF WORK:
Statewide.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Police Officer 3 by the presence of direct supervisory responsibilities.
Differs from Police Lieutenant by the absence of secondline supervisory responsibilities or by serving as shift supervisor in a large university police department.Examples of Work
The Orleans Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection AuthorityEast (SLFPAE) and includes Jefferson Parish New Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following: 80 Law Enforcement Protects life and property with an emphasis on law enforcement crime prevention crime and accident investigation and arranging emergency services. Incumbents patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime. Inspects and reports on the condition of 192 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls 1400 acres of levee turf maintenance area 200 landbased floodgates and 6 navigational floodgates 3 permanent canal closures and pumps and various valves along the levee system. Responds to complaints/requests for law enforcement assistance. Investigates disturbances suspicious activities and crimes. Intervenes in situations using force if necessary to restore order to prevent interference with normal operations or to protect life and property. Empowered to make arrests if necessary. Interviews witnesses; identifies collects and preserves evidence. Transports offenders to Central Lockup or turns them over to the appropriate authority. Completes all related reports regarding incidents. Directly supervises Police Officers 2 and 3 and in the absence of the Lieutenant (watch commander) acts in the capacity of the Lieutenant providing supervision for the assigned subordinates of the watch until such time as the Lieutenant returns to duty. Assigns patrol duties to Police Officers 2 and 3 and completes all records and reports related to law enforcement activities for the shift including activity sheets radio logs time and attendance reports daily folder checklist report accident reports etc. and provides to Police Lieutenant for review. Approves time cards and leave requests for Police Officers 2 and 3. Plans oversees and evaluates performance of subordinates and submits to the Police Lieutenant for review. Counsels employees regarding deficiencies or problem areas and suggests ways to improve. Answers phone and logs calls. Logs out hand radio units. Dispatches officers to sites of reported crimes accidents or disputes. In the event of injuries arranges for appropriate medical emergency response. Inspects assigned vehicle and equipment regularly to ensure that items are in proper working order. Reports any malfunctioning equipment or vehicle. Renders emergency first aid if necessary and calls for ambulance fire department or any other needed support when necessary. Works special assignments involving large crowd control operations surveillance activities and matters involving selective enforcement activities. Provides security to visiting dignitaries. Provides complex law enforcement services involving criminal investigations collection of evidence arrests and testimony in court cases. Provides traffic enforcement issuing citations for traffic or parking violations. Enforces motor vehicle laws and conducts motor vehicle accident investigations. Enforces DUI/DWI statutes. Administers breathalyzer and field sobriety tests. Testifies in court regarding issued citations or handled situations. Sets up roadblocks or barricades when roadways require closing due to inclement weather special events criminal investigations or other events. Directs traffic. Issues citations summons for violations of statutes. Patrols areas adjacent to the SLFPAE or other areas of Jefferson and Orleans Parish as requested. Responds to calls in the area and assists Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office and NOPD already on the scene. As requested provides assistance to other law enforcement entities including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff s Department the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries the FBI the Secret Service the DEA the US Coast Guard the US Customs Department and the Department of immigration and Naturalization. When requested assists other law enforcement departments in detaining aircraft arriving at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
20 Administrative and Training Handles complaints regarding subordinates relaying information to supervisory personnel for review and determination of action to be taken. Attends classes and training sessions to maintain law enforcement skills learn new techniques remain uptodate on laws affecting work and other matters deemed appropriate or beneficial. Attends inservice training to maintain minimum POST requirements. Training includes but is not limited to: firearms training first aid PR 24 baton training proper police equipment usage and any further training that the department believes will enhance the officers ability to perform his/her duties. Must complete the CPRA Certified Levee Inspector training program. Escorts SLFPAE staff trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement. Provides security for SLFPAEs emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding. Ensures that only authorized individuals have access to such areas Performs other duties as required and assigned
NOTE: During emergency events (hurricanes high water events etc. incumbents may be required to report for and remain on duty for the duration of the event or until released by the appropriate authority. Physical Demands: Incumbents must be able to safely and efficiently operate all police equipment and vehicles. In addition they must be able to lift throw and place 4050pound sandbags during emergency and disaster events. Other Requirements: Incumbents must be assessed by a clinical psychologist as being suited for law enforcement duties. Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and must be able to acquire and maintain a police commission from the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Incumbents must be POST certified (completed all requirements under law as prescribed by the Police Officer Standards of Training) by the end of the probationary period.
