Supplemental Information

The incumbent in this position provides a full range of police services for the Orleans Levee District by enforcing federal state and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The Police Sergeant supervises police officers on his assigned watch. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level i.e. Police Lieutenant and/or Police Captain.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of law enforcement experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana drivers license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:
To oversee a full range of police services on an assigned shift with primary emphasis on the enforcement of laws investigation of crimes and accidents and providing emergency services and crime prevention programs.

LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a higherlevel police official. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct over Police Officers 1 2 and 3.

LOCATION OF WORK:
Statewide.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Police Officer 3 by the presence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

Differs from Police Lieutenant by the absence of secondline supervisory responsibilities or by serving as shift supervisor in a large university police department.

Examples of Work

The Orleans Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection AuthorityEast (SLFPAE) and includes Jefferson Parish New Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Handles complaints regarding subordinates relaying information to supervisory personnel for review and determination of action to be taken.
  • Attends classes and training sessions to maintain law enforcement skills learn new techniques remain uptodate on laws affecting work and other matters deemed appropriate or beneficial.
  • Attends inservice training to maintain minimum POST requirements. Training includes but is not limited to: firearms training first aid PR 24 baton training proper police equipment usage and any further training that the department believes will enhance the officers ability to perform his/her duties. Must complete the CPRA Certified Levee Inspector training program.
  • Escorts SLFPAE staff trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement. Provides security for SLFPAEs emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding. Ensures that only authorized individuals have access to such areas
  • Performs other duties as required and assigned
NOTE: During emergency events (hurricanes high water events etc. incumbents may be required to report for and remain on duty for the duration of the event or until released by the appropriate authority.

Physical Demands:
Incumbents must be able to safely and efficiently operate all police equipment and vehicles. In addition they must be able to lift throw and place 4050pound sandbags during emergency and disaster events.

Other Requirements:
Incumbents must be assessed by a clinical psychologist as being suited for law enforcement duties. Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and must be able to acquire and maintain a police commission from the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Incumbents must be POST certified (completed all requirements under law as prescribed by the Police Officer Standards of Training) by the end of the probationary period.
