About the role:

The General Surgery Surgical Skills Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) role will be based at St Vincents Hospital Sydney and its affiliated training rotations.

Possible training rotations at St Vincents Hospital include:

  • ENT Surgery SVH
  • General Surgery/Vascular Evenings SVH
  • SRMO Relief SVH
  • Paediatric General Surgery Sydney Childrens Hospital
  • General Surgery Griffith Base Hospital

St Vincents Health Network Sydney (SVHN) is the Sydney public division of St Vincents Health Australia which is the largest diversified health care organisation within Australias not for profit and Catholic health care sectors. St Vincents Hospital Sydney is a 350 plus bed tertiary referral hospital. The Hospital provides adult medical surgical mental health and diagnostic services for the local community and specialty care for patients throughout NSW. The hospital offers specialised cardiac services and is the centre for cardiac transplant services for NSW. Centrally located in Darlinghurst St. Vincents Hospital Sydney sits on the edge of Sydneys business district close to major transport and superb cafes. St. Vincents is a teaching Hospital of the University of NSW and the Australian Catholic University with 17 professorial chairs attached to the University of NSW. The University of Notre Dame is colocated within the campus grounds. The philosophy and working environment of the Hospital is guided by the Mission and Values of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries: Compassion Justice Excellence and Integrity.


Sydney Childrens Hospital Randwick is one of Australias leading specialist medical centres for children caring for seriously ill and injured children from across NSW and beyond. It forms part of the Sydney Childrens Hospitals Network. Sydney Childrens Hospital Randwick provides a complex and comprehensive range of services in paediatric and adolescent medicine and surgery treating children with conditions including cancer trauma HIV/AIDS congenital abnormalities disabilities heart disease and respiratory disorders. Sydney Hospital is Australias first hospital and dates from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Clinical services provided are a 24 hr Emergency Department (for eyes and general) and outpatient departments (eyes general and hands). Clinical wards include Eyes Hands ENT and General Medicine as well as the PeriOperative Suite. Sydney Hospital is a quaternary referral unit for eye diseases and has a dedicated Hand Unit which is a tertiary referral centre for hand trauma abnormalities and diseases.


Griffith Base Hospital is a 90bed facility with 2 wellequipped operating theatres. There is general surgical general medical paediatric and obstetric emphasis. The hospital is also serviced with a 24hr Emergency Department ICU/ CCU and an extensive Outpatient Clinic and a rehabilitation and pain service. Diagnostic and support services within the hospital include Radiology (public and private) Pathology Pharmacy Physiotherapy and Blood Bank. The hospital performs approximately 3000 operations per annum. Trainees who undertake the General Surgery rotation at Griffith Base Hospital enjoy time in theatre with exposure to a large amount of laparoscopic work.

Selection Criteria:
1. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincents Health Australia

2. MBBS or equivalent currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia with a minimum of 2 years of postgraduate experience and previous experience in a surgical department relevant to the position or specialty interest including sufficient clinical experience in order to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
3. Commitment to relevant SET training program: either completed or on track to complete the requirements for admission to SET training. This includes the completion of desired courses exams and terms.
4. Demonstrated ability to complete rotations as allocated and required in the Eastern and Greater Southern Surgical Skills Network.
5. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills judgement and expertise including demonstrated excellent verbal written and interpersonal skills with the capacity to vary communication style.
6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
7. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment
8. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to further selfeducation professional development and to quality improvement patient safety and risk management.
