ABOUT THE JOB

SALARY
All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification $6378 per month). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range $7771 per month).

JOB SUMMARY

Persons in these positions work at a high school for 8 hours per day 11 months per year. Daily working schedule will fluctuate according to sporting events.Under general supervision administers preventive and rehabilitative treatment to students and athletes engaged in various high school sports and activities with specific instruction from school site administration and/or consulting physicians; fit protective gear; performs related work as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Attends team practices and games to administer first aid and emergency care to injured athletes and students and inspects playing facilities and equipment to ensure they are free of hazards are sanitary and are maintained properly.
  • Advises coaching staff student athletic trainers athletes and parents on the care and prevention of athletic injuries.
  • Educates coaching staff parents and athletes on the importance of acclimatization fluid/electrolyte balance and nutrition in the prevention of illness and injuries.
  • Assists coaching staff in the implementation of the conditioning programs to prevent and reduce occurrence of injury and illness.
  • Completes and maintains athletic injury reports for every reported injury during athletic events and practices.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports that comply with District policies and State and federal laws and regulations and meet legal and regulatory standards.
  • Evaluates selects modifies and fits prophylactic and protective equipment and other custom devices as prescribed by a physician and as needed to prevent and minimize the risk of injury or reinjury.
  • Recommends fits and applies braces splints and assistive devices to facilitate recovery.
  • Evaluates athletes who present with acute subacute or chronic musculoskeletal disorders and medical conditions to determine the best plan of care.
  • Performs assessments of athletes to identify impairments functional limitations severity of conditions and disabilities resulting from injuries or illnesses incurred during athletic participation and determine appropriate treatment plans and when consultation with other health care providers is necessary; makes referrals as necessary.
  • Works with treating physicians as appropriate.
  • Communicates appropriate information (within HIPAA guidelines) to athletes parents and coaching staff regarding the athletes medical status treatment plan ability to participate and assists in the athletes functional recovery and return to play deferring to medical personnel when appropriate.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of selects and applies therapeutic interventions using best evidence.
  • Provides educational tools necessary to facilitate optimal recovery including instruction in selfmanagement and prognosis.
  • Organizes preparticipation physical examinations with school personnel as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal law and accrediting agencies policies related to delivery of healthcare.
  • Maintains the high school athletic training area; cleans disinfects and maintains equipment in the athletic training area.
  • Inventories orders and maintains athletic training room materials and supplies and assists with athletic training budget preparation as directed.
  • Operates a variety of office equipment a computer and assigned software.
  • Attends meetings conferences and inservice trainings.


Education and Experience: Graduation from a Commission Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited program with a masters degree in Athletic Training or closely related field and one year of experience working in an athletic training environment. Experience working with high school aged children is desirable.


CERTIFICATE: Must possess and maintain a valid Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC) credential issued by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC). Must possess and maintain a valid First Aid certificate and CardioPulmonary Resuscitation Certificate. Instructor certification to teach First Aid CPR and AED certification courses is highly desirable.


LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.


Knowledge of:

  • Methods practices and procedures used in athletic training activities including conditioning injury prevention injury assessment and rehabilitation.
  • Principles and techniques of therapeutic treatments including exercise protective gear taping wrapping and bandaging.
  • Symptoms and treatment of athletic injuries.
  • First aid and CPR techniques.
  • Basic principles of anatomy kinesiology physiology nutrition diet and first aid.
  • Physical fitness hygiene and safety procedures related to athletic programs.
  • Safety and protective equipment used in sports.
  • Disinfection techniques for athletic training materials and equipment.
  • General principles of training and providing work direction.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact patience and courtesy.
  • Basic recordkeeping and report preparation techniques.

Ability to:

  • Provide preventative and rehabilitative athletic training services and treatment to students.
  • Perform clinical and sideline evaluations of athletic injuries and render immediate care.
  • Assess injuries respond calmly and exercise sound judgment in stressful situations.
  • Develop and implement injury treatment programs independently and in consultation with physicians as appropriate.
  • Operate a wide variety of athletic therapeutic and exercise gear and equipment.
  • Ensure student understanding of proper exercise techniques.
  • Operate athletic rehabilitation and weight equipment.
  • Operate first aid and adaptive equipment.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

Applications will be accepted from the general public and district employees who possess the above qualifications.The district reserves the right to invite applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the requirements needed for the position to continue in the examination process.The examination may consist of an evaluation of training and experience multiple choice performance and oral/technical exams. Persons needing reasonable accommodation must notify the Office of Personnel Services by the last day to file. A qualifying score must be achieved on all portions of the examination in order to be placed on the open eligibility list. Outside and district candidates will be placed on one ranked list with eligible permanent district employees receiving five seniority points which will be added to their final scores.

INFORMATION ABOUT APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND EMPLOYMENT

VETERANS CREDIT: Veterans shall have an additional five 5 points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code Section 45296. Veteran as used in this article means any person who has served in the United States armed forces in time of war or national emergency declared by the President of the United States of America and who has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Armed forces means the United States Air Force Army Navy Marine Corps or Coast Guard. At least thirty 30 days of active service are required to obtain veteran preference points.

Disabled veterans shall have an additional ten 10 points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code Section 45296. A disabled veteran as used in this article means any veteran who is currently declared by the United States Veterans Administration to be ten percent 10 or more disabled as a result of service in the Armed Forces of the United States. Proof of disability shall be deemed conclusive if it is of record in the United States Veterans Administration.

Additional eligibility may be granted based on future changes to the law and verification from the Veterans Administration or the United States Office of Personnel Management.

In order to obtain credit the applicant shall furnish satisfactory proof of qualifying military service prior to establishment of the eligibility list. No adjustment of rank on the list shall be made when such proof is presented thereafter.

A veteran may be credited veterans preference points only to obtain initial employment in the district. Thereafter the only additional points for an open examination shall be seniority points granted in accord with section 4220.3(C)2.

HIRING PROCEDURES: Garden Grove is a merit system (civil service) school district. Employment and promotions are based upon merit fitness and qualifications. The person selected to fill any regular position will be from among the top three ranks on the eligibility list approved by the Personnel Commission. All regular employees will serve a six 6 month probation.

EXAMINATION FOR TUBERCULOSIS:Proof of freedom from active tuberculosis must be furnished prior to employment and must be based upon an intradermal Mantoux tuberculin skin test completed within the last 60 days.

FINGERPRINTING: All new employees will be fingerprinted.
