WINGS Program Inc. in Palatine IL is looking to hire a fulltime Awake Overnight House Advocate to keep our safe house running smoothly at night. Established in 1985 as a nonprofit advocate for homeless women and children we have expanded to become one of the largest domestic violence service and housing providers in Illinois. Today single individuals (women/men/transgender) and their children are able to receive temporary safe shelter through WINGS housing while our staff provides oneonone individualized assistance in setting personal goals that will enable them to work continue their education and care for themselves and their children. Simply put we provide a pathway to independence for people whose lives have been disrupted by domestic violence.
In order to reach our goal of providing all the tools and support needed to ensure that families can move towards safety independence and selfsufficiency we have to hire top talent who share our values and vision. Objective: To maintain the smooth operation of the Safe House and Crisis Line and support clients as needed during the overnight hours.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate the Crisis Line by providing crisis intervention counseling education safety planning and referrals to callers.
Conduct and approve intake and eligibility evaluations to determine guests needs and appropriateness for services at the Safe House.
Interact with guests in the community areas of the house and role model social skills conflict resolution parenting and other skills of daily living (this may include time management selfcare conflict and stress management parenting budgeting and other).
Supervise and coordinate activities related to house policies and chores.
Identify guest needs and communicate these needs to the responsible staff member to secure donations and services.
Conduct hourly rounds according to policy to ensure building is safe and secure reporting any concerns to appropriate personnel.
Maintain timely accurate records including uptodate client files statistics report and census.
Update daily roster and shift reports.
Assist with meals and mealtime during the shift.
Assist in processing and storing donations as requested.
Attend and participate in supervision weekly group meetings and other meetings as required.
Conduct attend and participate in appropriate training and education.
Immediately report child abuse to Department of Children and Family Services as mandated by law and in accordance with agency procedures.
Work evenings weekends and holidays as needed.
As an Awake Overnight House Advocate you are responsible for the overall safety and wellbeing of the resident guests in the safe house during the overnight hours. You are essential to creating an environment where families can identify and access their strengths and become aware of the impact of domestic violence. When guests arrive you conduct intake and eligibility evaluations to determine their needs and appropriateness for services. With great attention to detail you enter guest information into the database. Maintaining the security of our safe house with safety checks.
While interacting with guests you are sure to model appropriate social skills conflict resolution parenting and other skills of daily living. You are also the voice on the other end of our crisis phone line. People call in and depend on you to provide emotional support. You provide crisis intervention emotional support education safety planning and referrals. In this social services position it is rewarding to know that you play a role in helping people escape their domestic violence situation.
You also do a lot of work behind the scenes. You identify and request needed items and assist in the processing and storing of donations. If there are any building maintenance issues you are sure to report them to the Facilities Department. We depend on you to keep things running smoothly!
Associate degree in social services closely related field or equivalent job experience.
40 Hour Domestic Violence Training (WINGS can provide if needed).
CPR and First Aid certification (WINGS can provide if needed).
Food handler certification or willingness to get it.
Basic computer skills and ability to accurately enter data.
Possess the ability to work efficiently and independently and be highly organized with attention to detail along with strong project management interpersonal and problemsolving skills.
Skilled in working with sensitive issues and in maintaining professional boundaries with clients.
Must demonstrate professionalism flexibility good judgment and commitment to teamwork.
Ability to stay awake during the night shift.
Physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds to assist with donation storage.
Willingness to work weekends and holidays to ensure the complete staffing of our 24hour facility.
