Starting salary for this position is: $40.83 $86.87 per hour based on workload for the course was $5574.32 before withholds in 202425 and is expected to be slightly higher in 202526.

This is an adjunct (parttime) position. Compensation will be prorated according to the amount of workload assigned. Spokane Colleges reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE) which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

About Us

Spokane Falls Community College is seeking qualified candidates for consideration for employment as an Environmental Science Adjunct Instructor at its Pullman Center on the Washington State University Campus in Pullman Washington. This is an inperson instructional position. We seek applicants with a high degree of professionalism a strong commitment to our students diversity and global awareness and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. The college strives for faculty who are content experts and who are knowledgeable about best practices innovative strategies and instructional technologies that support teaching and learning.

We seek applications for an adjunct (parttime) teaching position for a hybrid (blended) section of Introduction to Environmental Science 101 Introduction to Physical Environmental Science in the fall quarter September 17 December 11 2025 and Environmental Science 201 Earth History in a subsequent quarter. Classes consist of weekly sessions of a 75minute inperson lecture and 75minute asynchronous online lecture and two 2hour inperson labs. Compensation for the course was $5574.32 before withholds in 202425 and is expected to be slightly higher in 202526.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare for and instruct collegelevel courses in Environmental science in facetoface hybrid or online formats based on need of the department.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means to include but not limited to developing course syllabi handouts and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluates student progress and provides clear timely feedback.
  • Provide availability and accessibility to students through a combination of scheduled office hours email and other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Provide timely feedback and support to students.
  • Maintain accurate records for course grades.
  • May participate in department and general faculty meetings whenever germane.
  • Maintain professional standards in interactions with the college community.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follow established procedures in areas such as printing turning in grades bookstore orders student safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS in Environmental Science or related field with course work and expertise in biology.
  • Prior teaching experience in higher education.
  • Effective oral and written communication in a classroom and in other professional settings
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working/interacting with colleagues staff students administrators and others of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Acceptance of and willingness to support the role that community colleges serve in higher education and specifically the mission values goals and objectives of the Community Colleges of Spokane.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution with emphasis in Environmental Science or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Prior teaching experience in Environmental Science
  • Experience teaching in different modalities including hybrid and online.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations.
  • Experience in participating in faculty groups and collaborating in an academic environment.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. Benefits Information

Adjunct faculty must work two 2 consecutive quarters at 50 or more of fulltime academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical dental life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAACref retirement plan or WA State Retirement Plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
