Job Description

Overview

The 2nd Class Stationary Engineer is assigned to the safe efficient operation and maintenance of Central Plant and satellite equipment used for heating and cooling contributing towards providing a safe and accessible invitingly clean and comfortable functionally enriched and wellmaintained campus environment through service excellence.

There are 2 available positions to be filled.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Supports strategic planning efforts addressing stewardship responsibilities and longterm sustainability of the Universitys campus facilities and infrastructure and maximizing opportunities for efficient delivery of campus services and optimal investments in Universitywide infrastructure

Operations

  • Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Operation and monitoring the utility plants building automation and fire systems
  • Performs maintenance as required to keep equipment such as boilers pumps air compressors water softeners chillers and deionizers operating in a safe and efficient manner
  • Inspection and maintenance of building HVAC mechanical and plumbing system components
  • Responds to emergency calls of various types such as fire alarms
  • Determines appropriate course of action in maintenance and emergency situations
  • Maintenance of satellite equipment and ammoniabased refrigeration units
  • Creates reports of equipment conditions
  • Requisitioning of materials

Health & Safety

  • In consideration of the Universitys commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all faculty support staff students and visitors responsible for ensuring University facilities and departmental activities are compliant with all applicable legislation regulations codes and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety

Other

  • Provides training instruction and work direction to others as required
  • Coordinates the work of employees assigned to assist with tasks
  • Performs the work of other trades as required to the limit of their skill and code requirements

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of a grade 12 education and a Second Class Provincial Certificate
  • Five 5 years recent experience as an Operating Engineer
  • Experience is required in the operation and maintenance of oil and gas fired boilers chillers water softeners air compressors and ammonia based refrigeration units and related auxiliary equipment
  • Must be familiar with the operation of boiler control and building automation systems
  • Must maintain a valid G class drivers license
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Conditions may be hot cold dirty dusty wet or noisy can be assigned to 12 hour rotating shift schedule; rotating days and nights including weekends
