Location: Monroe Correctional Complex Monroe WA

Salary Range: $5564 $7489 Monthly


This position is represented by the Teamsters 117 bargaining unit.


Are you a safety guru with a desire to ensure others are trained and knowledgeable regarding safety standards and protocols If so the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a responsible and collaborative individual to join the Safety team at the Monroe Correctional Complex as a Safety Officer 2 (SO2! The goal of this position is to administer the comprehensive employee occupational safety and health programs with MCC.


Under the direction of the Safety Officer 3 (SO3 you will be tasked with developing and administering environmental health and safety accident prevention programs for employee contract staff incarcerated individual and visitor protection. You will work with others in the facility to ensure the safety program complies with the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) rules regulations and codes including developing unique safety and health programs that may be specific to individual institutions or program areas.


As a Safety Officer 2 you will be responsible for ensuring completion and distribution of the safety database including reviewing and updating information included in the database. Your leadership and critical thinking skills will also be utilized as you will manage and supervise safety officers at assigned prison institutions provide advice and technical expertise to other health and safety professionals and mentoring and developing other team members to maximize skills and effectiveness in the implementation of the local safety programs.

Duties

As a Safety Officer 2 some of your duties will include:

  • Safety Program Implementation and Compliance for the Department of Corrections which could look like:
    • Developing and implementing safety programs rules and policies for employees contract staff incarcerated individuals and visitors of assigned institutions
    • Ensuring compliance with DOC safety program policies and applicable regulatory safety standards/codes
    • Conducting periodic local facility safety inspections to identify unsafe practices
    • Establishing strategies for suitable corrective measures to manage risk of accident and injury losses in accordance with WISHA and other regulatory standards
    • Ensuring proper recordkeeping for the Safety Program to include data analysis of trends safety investigations accident/hazard reports inspections and safety meeting minutes.
    • Reviewing accident/injury reports to ensure there is sufficient information and details and investigating as necessary
  • Safety Program Technical Assistance for the Department of Corrections to include:
    • Advising managers supervisors safety committee and employees as to program status and performance of the safety program
    • Serving as the Safety Officer for emergency response utilizing the incident command system
    • Conferring with and advise managers supervisors and employees on occupational safety and health activities problems and needs
    • Providing safety assistance services and technical advice to employees contract staff incarcerated individuals volunteers visitors
    • Attending executive employees chainofcommand departmental and other meetings as necessary to share safety information
  • Training Education and Information Sharing
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):

  • A bachelors degree in occupational safety and health safety studies natural science business or public administration education or allied field.

AND

  • 1year professional experience in occupational safety and health programs

OR

  • An equivalent combination of related education and experience may substitute year for year for education

OR

  • One 1 year as a Safety Officer 1

This position may be filled at the Safety Officer 1 level with the following requirements and will progress to the Safety Officer 2 level after one year of onthejob training and successful completion of the required training plan.


Safety Officer 1 Salary: $Monthly


Safety Officer 1 Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree in occupational safety and health safety studies natural science business or public administration education or allied field.

OR

  • 2 years professional experience in occupational safety and health programs.

OR

  • 2 years professional experience as an employee working in a Washington State Department of Corrections facility involving the assessment and application of safe behaviors and workplace practices

Telework Details

This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner to take proper care all stateissued equipment and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a drop in area available however a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
