Location:John Sinclair House Edinburgh or Fort George (with hybrid working)
Working Hours:Monday Friday 35 hours per week
Expected Interview Date: 13 and 14 May 2025 via Teams
This post offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the work of the team where you will provide expert archaeological historic building and historical advice and research to many internal and external stakeholders. The principal duties of the post will focus on our North Region Properties in Care (PICs) covering north mainland Scotland Northern and Western Isles.

Key Responsibilities of this role
- Responsible for providing expert advice and counsel to stakeholders undertaking development maintenance operations conservation works and visitor experience upgrades on the archaeological and cultural significance impact of the proposals;
- Leading on advice on archaeological mitigation for works at PICs and to manage archaeology monitoring/excavation and research projects in North Region and nationally as required;
- Providing expert cultural heritage advice and signoff on content for a range of interpretative and engagement material including but not limited to interpretation panels guidebooks audioguides blogs podcasts and the Members Magazine;
- Responsible for ensuring that the cultural significance of the Properties in Care is maintained and where possible enhanced through projects undertaken across the HES Estate;
- Responsible for ensuring that changes to Properties in Care are managed appropriately and following best practice for heritage assets;
- Contributing expert cultural significance and archaeological advice within the Scheduled Monument Consent and/or planning process in North Region and nationally as required;
- Responsible for leading archaeological / historical research related to interpretation events learning climate change and conservation projects and ad hoc enquires in North Region and nationally as required; coordinating input from other specialists internally and externally as required;
- Responsible for authoring editing reviewing and updating Statements of Significance and contributions to properties in care in North Region or as part of the postholders specialism and nationally as required;
- Responsible for the management of or input to the Minor Archaeological Services to PICs calloff contract and specifically for commissioned archaeological works in North Region;
- Working closely with the High Level Masonry project team to provide archaeological and historical advice and guidance at all stages of the project life cycle;
- Project management including managing internal budget of projects and programmes related to properties in care in both short and long term;
- Providing senior signoff on the decision making/assessments by the Cultural Resources Advisor;
- You may be required to undertake line management and oversee professional development of the Cultural Resources Advisor(s)
Key requirements of the role:

Essential:
- SCQF Level 11or equivalent level in a subject related to the role e.g. archaeology or history or equivalent relevant experience;
- Excellent working knowledge of British and in particular Scottish archaeology and historical background of sites monuments and buildings from the Mesolithic period to recent times;
- Demonstrable experience of providing high quality cultural resource advice relating to the conservation preservation and management of the historic environment;
- Excellent knowledge of current heritage legislation policy and guidance and how this relates to monuments in the care of Scottish Ministers;
- A good understanding of cultural significance and the values associated with the historic environment
- Proven experience of archaeological and/or historical research including writing archaeological reports deskbased assessments heritage impact assessments and managing cultural heritage archives or databases;
- Excellent understanding of the processes of archaeological fieldwork and or/postexcavation;
- Proven project management skills and ability to deliver to the highest quality;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills preferably with an ability to put across complex situations in a way that all can understand and experience of public speaking and/or providing outreach;
- Professional experience of working and liaising with other consultants professionals and contractors;
- Full UK Driving licence as you will be required to travel to PICs that are often remote and not served by public transport.
