Qualifications:

  1. Kansas Teaching Certificate/License with ESL endorsement
  2. Highly qualified status according to KSDE and federal regulations
  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Principal or administrator designee

Job Goal:
Provide an effective program of instruction based on the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.

Performance Responsibilities:
Student Instruction and Support:

  1. Work with individuals and small groups to teach and practice English language skills in the areasof reading writing listening and speaking.
  2. Work with individuals and small groups to apply English language skills in the context of learningageappropriate general curriculum.
  3. Work with individuals and small groups to understand cultural differences and explicitly teachsocial language skills.
  4. Provide guidance and be an advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse students in bothacademic and social settings.
  5. Build instruction upon previously learned materials.

Planning:

  1. Consult with teachers guidance counselors and administrators to select and schedule ELLs into appropriate educational courses to meet their social and developmental needs.
  2. Develop and maintain current and accurate ESOL Student Enhancement Plans.
  3. Maintain appropriate documentation of ESOL instruction and services within ESOL Student Enhancement Plans.
  4. Monitor and document the delivery of both language arts instruction and contentarea instruction for each student in their ESOL Enhancement Plans.

Instructional Services:

  1. Model the effective use of ESOL instructional strategies in a variety of content areas.
  2. Model the effective use of strategies for differentiating instruction for ELLs.
  3. Model the effective use of the components of sheltered instruction and provide direct assistance to content area teachers to incorporate the components in classroom settings.
  4. Exhibit an understanding of second language acquisition theory and its impact upon the social and academic development of PreK12 students.
  5. Demonstrate effective skills in reading writing math and speaking as necessary for assignment.
  6. Demonstrate command of the subject matter for which he/she is assigned to teach/coordinate.
  7. Implement the districts written curriculum and the state and district assessment program.
  8. Collaborate with teachers on the selection use sharing and integration of books equipment and technology for English language proficiency development.
  9. Prepare for assigned classes and show evidence of that preparation.

Monitoring and Reporting:

  1. Utilize effective databased problem solving skills and provide evidence of individual student/adult learning.
  2. Provide for regular assessment of student/adult progress for all assigned content areas and reteach adapt and/or provide extensions based on the data from these assessments.
  3. Consult with school personnel in the delivery and analysis of assessments for determining the English language proficiency levels of students in listening speaking reading and writing.
  4. Collaborate with school personnel in scheduling and conducting parent/teacher conferences.
  5. Communicate with parents and/or families on an ongoing basis about student performance and to share information on available community resources.
  6. Consult with administrators and registrars in maintaining and monitoring ELL student records.
  7. Collaborate with school personnel in determining the eligibility of ELLs referred for special education staffing.

Professional Development:

  1. Attend and participate in assigned staff/team meetings.
  2. Participate in workshops seminars conferences and/or advanced coursework which further knowledge of best practices in the area of ESOL assigned content areas and technology.
  3. Maintain state certification/licensure standards for teachers in the field for which he/she is assigned.

Learning Environment:

  1. Take necessary and reasonable steps to protect students which include creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  2. Demonstrate respect and value for all students and staff and maintain professional and ethical standards.
  3. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment materials and facilities.
  4. Meet and instruct students/adults at designated locations and times.
  5. Uphold and enforces school rules district policies and administrative regulations.

Critical Skills:

  • Possess and maintain licensure (certification) in the state of Kansas
  • Ability to speak clearly to various groups expressing ideas in a logical and forthright manner
  • Possess composition skills suitable for producing written communication for a variety of readers
  • Ability to quickly analyze a situation and provide prompt advice
  • Ability to respond to information requests in a courteous timely and helpful manner
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities using appropriate software on district computer system andcommunication equipment
  • Ability to manage job responsibilities while meeting established deadlines
  • Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with others

Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor
