Job Description

JOB TITLE: Director of Indian Education

DEPARTMENT: Administration

REPORTS TO: Superintendent and Designees

FLSA: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: 12 month

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelors degree in Education or Bachelors degree in related field required; valid Oklahoma teaching and/or current administrative certificate preferred but not required.

Experience: Leadership experience in either a district or building site role preferred. Preferred experience in administration of federal grants. Counseling and teaching or working with school age students preferred. Native American preference. Salary based on the current Certified Salary Schedule if applicant holds an Oklahoma teaching certificate. If not salary will be based on the support staff salary schedule.

Skills: Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules regulations policies and laws applicable to education; expertise in the Oklahoma State Department of Educations policies and procedures.

DIRECTOR OF INDIAN EDUCATION

The Director of Indian Education is responsible for the operation management and supervision of all Indian education programs. The Director is responsible to the Superintendent and has authority over all Indian education personnel. The Director shares supervision of personnel with building principals as appropriate. The Director coordinates Indian education programs with regular school programs working with building principals when needed or requested. The Director acts as a liaison between the school administration and the Title VI and JOM Parent Committees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: these statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities duties and skills required.

  1. Assure the effective implementation of the federal grant programs that includes measurable longterm goals and shortterm objectives as well as aligned strategies activities milestones professional development plans and budgets. This will be accomplished through scheduled reviews with school leadership teams.
  2. Recruits selects assigns and evaluates all Indian education personnel with advice from the appropriate Parent Committee and with the approval of the Superintendent or designee under the direction of the Board of Education.
  3. Acts as a liaison between the school and Native American communities.
  4. Advocate for Native American programs and students to the school district.
  5. Coordinates and supervises all parent committee meetings.
  6. Facilitate the data review process to identify areas that impede students academic growth.
  7. Effectively establish annual goals to increase student achievement and focus the entire school on improvement activities.
  8. Manage personnel effectively through appropriate delegation planning and evaluation. Fosters an environment where staff and faculty work cooperatively together and hold each other accountable to reach high levels of student achievement.
  9. Responsible for developing and implementing the federal program grants developing budgets and providing expenditure controls on budgets.
  10. Responsible for the monitoring of instructional and support services provided within assigned facility to ensure that they are of the highest quality and provided in accordance with Federal Grants.
  11. Responsible for working directly with administrator(s) of facilities to increase the quality of services provided to Native American students when said service is not of the highest quality.
  12. Responsible for ensuring that all records of attendance grades transcripts reports compliance etc. are completed and filed in a consistent manner with District State and Federal policy.
  13. Be highly visible within each of assigned facilities so that you may have knowledge of the performance of the team in delivering quality services.
  14. Responsible for resolving parent/guardian complaints in an efficient and effective manner.
  15. Serve as a member of the Districts Administrative team and attend required meetings when called.
  16. Maintain positive working relationships with community agencies.
  17. Communicate frequently and directly with the District Administrative team regarding potential problems or issues which require immediate attention in a proactive manner.
  18. Other duties as assigned by district administration.
  19. Attend School Board meetings frequently.
  20. Any other issue not mentioned above. (As in any other duties assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or their designees(s).

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises oversees and manages districts Indian Education program and staff associated with it. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the districts policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  1. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read analyze and interpret common academic journals financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to district leaders public groups and/or boards of education.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply intermediate mathematical concepts.

    REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    OTHER SKILLS/EXPECTATIONS: Develops cooperative and functional relationships with district staff and the public; maintains consistent and punctual attendance; insures job responsibilities are met competently and within established deadlines.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Exposure to the following situations may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit stand walk and climb stairs.
  • Normal effect or occasional periods of light physical activity.
  • Accidents improbable outside of minor injuries such as cuts ses or bruises.
