Description

The Richmond Public Library Division of Youth Services is seeking qualified candidates for the parttime temporary summer early intern position of Library Associate in Youth Services for the 2025 Summer Reading Program. This class coordinates programs and services for users and staff of the City Library. Work includes planning developing and implementing special library activities and programs executing the City Librarys strategic plan including providing programs for children and special needs. This position also provides help assisting patrons with locating materials in the computer or catalog and with physically locating materials or equipment. This position may support circulation functions and assist with special projects or other library programs.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Prepares coordinates plans and facilitates programs and activities
  • Promotes and markets programs and activities
  • Assist patrons and answers questions
  • Performs circulation duties
  • Conducts outreach
  • Represents library at various community events
  • Attends various meetings including staff meetings
  • Requires working a few weekends (Saturday).

Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Typical Knowledge Skills and Abilities: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary; not an inclusive list.


The incumbent has knowledge of:

  • Library functions policies and practices
  • Childrens developmental stages
  • Childrens STEM activities
  • Classification systems such as the Dewey Decimal System
  • Computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Electronic databases and related software applications such as SIRSI Workflows Community as it relates to promoting library services
  • English composition spelling and grammar
  • General knowledge of current and classic literature including childrens Keyboarding
  • Subjects held by the library


The individual can demonstrate skills on:

  • Excellent customer service
  • Assisting patrons
  • Communicating with various internal and external departments
  • Keeping childrens attention
  • Marketing and promoting special programs
  • Planning coordinating developing implementing and facilitating special activities and programs
  • Reading stories to children
  • Troubleshooting
  • Using library programs as tools for reference or information questions
  • Using various office equipment such as a computers printers laminators etc. Writing/creating and editing various reports story scripts and other documents Oral and written communication


This individual can demonstrate the ability tohave an interest in library culture as learning environments for all levels work with children and adults with a wide range of abilities serve the public and speak publicly.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Studies in fields that work with children (i.e. Education Early Childhood Programs Sports)

LICENSING CERTIFICATIONS and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
