GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a wide variety of duties related to protecting lifeand property of City residents. Functionscan and will change on a day to day basis. The Captain will need to be able toadapt to numerous challenges and multitask.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of the Fire Chief.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises Firefighter/Advance Emergency MedicalTechnicians.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Functions as the Station Officer.
Be able to function as an Incident Command on fireincidents.
Manage daily EMS response.
Command and understand how to manage MCI incidents.
Operates under state and national guidelines; maintainsrequired state certifications.
Coordinates station vehicles and equipment maintenance.
Evaluates performance of firefighters.
Determines the need for new equipment and supplies forassigned station.
Coordinates training of firefighters.
Schedules firefighters for work.
Conducts cause and origin investigations.
Prepares incident reports which includes fire and EMS reports.
Participates in personnel actions such as recruitment anddiscipline.
Regular and predictable attendance
May be assigned special functions by the Fire Chief.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Educationand Experience:
A. Graduation from high school or equivalent GED.
B. Three years of experience as a firefighter II. plus one year of specialized training in fire sciencegeneral
management etc.
C. Or an equivalent combination of education andexperience.
2. KnowledgeSkills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of firefighting methods techniques andprocedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their mostappropriate and effective use; equipment and maintenance and care; state andcity codes laws and regulations and ordinances related to fire prevention;fire vehicle equipment and apparatus operation; emergency driving techniquesassociated with heavy firefighting apparatus; emergency medical techniques andprocedures and firstaid; interpersonal communication skills. Workingknowledge of training methods and techniques.
Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instruction; workin dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively verbally andin writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; performunder extreme weather conditions; work oncall and onshift work; developeffective working relationships with supervisors fellow employees and thepublic.
3. Required Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Driver License.
Must be Utah State Fire Officer Icertified.
Must be Utah Advanced EMT certified.
Must be hazmat certified(operations level).
Must be Utah State Fire Inspector Ior Company Inspector within one year of hire.
Must be Utah State Apparatus DriverOperator certified.
Must be Utah State Wildlandcertified within one year of hire.
Preference will be given for heavyrescue certifications.
4. Preferred SpecialQualifications:
Applicants who have one or moreTechnical Rescue Certifications.
5. Work Environment:
Position generally performs in acontrolled environment but subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response travel expected in normalcourse of performing duties. Manyfunctions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be acondition of job retention. Variouslevels of mental application required i.e. memory for details emotionalstability discriminating thinking creative problem solving; and continuoususe of motor skills.
FLSA AND ATWILL STATUS
This position is nonappointed andis entitled to protections of Utah Code. As such the Fire Captain shall be entitledto due process appeal authority as set forth in Utah Code.
The Fire Captain position is anonexempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
