JOB TITLE:Head XC Cross Country Coach Hedrick

CLASSIFICATION: Extra Comp

SUPERVISOR:Building Principal

CONTRACT:Athletic Season

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Head Athletic Coach will supervise the athletic program for which assigned and coach the varsity team of his/her school. The Head Coach will direct programs which will instruct athletes in the fundamental skills strategy safety procedures and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the

same time the athletes shall receive instruction that will lead to the formation of moral values price of accomplishment good sportsmanship selfdiscipline and selfconfidence.

The Head Athletic Coach supervises the Assistant Coaches of the program assigned participating athletes managers and student assistants.

It is the intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In case not specifically covered it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Head Athletic Coach is responsible to the building principal and works cooperatively with the Coordinator of Secondary Athletics and building Activities Coordinator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL

  1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the program assigned.
  2. Has knowledge of Oregon School Activities Association rules and regulations as well as Southern Oregon Middle School Athletic Conference Rules; implements those same consistently and interprets them for staff.
  3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  4. Works to increase morale and cooperation within the schoolsentire athletic program.
  5. Knows effective safety procedures in their sport plans andimplements a program of instruction in safe practices.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Establishes the fundamental philosophy skills and techniques to be taught by and conducts a clinic for theprogram assigned for staff.
  2. Trains and informs staff; encourages professional growth byattendance at clinics according to district clinic policy and funds available.
  3. Delegates specific duties supervises implementation and atseasons end analyzes staff effectiveness and works cooperatively with the building principal in an evaluation of allassistants.
  4. Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Principaland Coordinator of Secondary Athletics.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  1. Assists the Activities Director in scheduling and providingtransportation. Checks the athletic schedule for conflicts and makes necessary confirmations.
  2. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled athletic events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  3. Is responsible to the principal for compliance with school district SOMSACand OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations parental consent forms insurance waivers and academic/residence eligibility.
  4. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and facilities.
  5. Advises the Activities Director and recommends policy method or procedural changes.
  6. Prepares the annual season summary at the conclusion of the sport season.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  2. Gives constant attention to an athletes grades and conduct.
  3. Supervises the athletes before during and after practices contests or while traveling and provides by his/her presence proper guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  4. Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries medical attention and emergencies. Works cooperatively with the athletic trainer in matters of injury prevention and the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  5. Ensures completion of paperwork on all athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the proper office within 24 hours of the injury.
  6. Directs student managers assistants and statisticians.
  7. Determines discipline in accordance with State District and School guidelines policies and athletes rules and procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible for team rule infractions.

FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participates in the budgeting function by identifying equipment and supply specifications such as type style color or technical information and seeking cost estimates from vendors. The Head Coach is responsible for knowing the programs budget and operating within budget appropriations.
  2. Is accountable for all supplies and equipment and reports the cost to the Activities Office of any equipment/supplies lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits an annual inventory. Responsible to ensure accuracy of fine and hold notices on lost or stolen equipment.
  3. Is knowledgeable of district purchasing procedures and timelines and follows those methods in the purchase of supplies and equipment.
  4. Supervises marking and identification of equipment before issuing and storing.
  5. Supervises equipment rooms coaches offices and the issue or requisition of equipment.
  6. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  7. Secures all doors lights windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
  8. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property its care and proper use.

PUBLIC RELATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Organizes parents coaches players and guests for preseason meetings.
  2. Promotes the sport within the school through encouraging participation of athletes that are not in another sports program and promotes the sport outside the school through booster clubs YMCA youth sports programs and other youth sports organizations.
  3. Responsible for maintaining good public relations with booster club officials volunteers faculty parents and fans.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this position successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  1. Of rules and regulations of the sport to which assigned.
  2. Of fundamentals techniques and strategies of the sportto which assigned.
  3. Of safety factors involved in the sport assigned.
  4. Of physical ability and limitations of the level he/she is teaching.
  5. Of the Medford School District Athletic Policies SOMSACand OSAA Rules and Regulations.

Skills:

  1. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with people.
  2. Must be able to demonstrate basic skills of sport to which assigned.
  3. Must have the ability to organize supervise and evaluate the total sport program.

Attitudes:

  1. Must be positive.
  2. Should be enthusiastic.
  3. Should possess a willingness to cooperate and to adjust to various situations.

Experience:

  1. Previous coaching experience of sport to which assigned is preferred.
  2. Previous experience as participant of sport to which assigned preferred.
  3. Previous teaching experience preferred.

Education:

  1. Valid Oregon teacher certification is preferred.
  2. College training in coaching desirable.
