Job Description

WORK SCHEDULE: School Year plus ten 10 additional working days during summer months (at the close of the school year and at opening of the school year).

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

A High School Graduation Coach is someone who is engaged in high school graduation assistance activities including but not limited to working with students school faculty and staff parents and guardians. The High School Graduation Coach will provide assistance to all high school students individually and in groups regarding high school graduation and completion including but not limited to analyzing data to identify students or different categories of students (ethnic gender ELL SPED) with potential high school graduation problems; planning creating implementing and tracking individual high school graduation plans; identifying and resolving barriers to graduation; and facilitating college and career choices and planning.

DUTIES:

  • Utilize the components of Dropout Early Warning System (DEWS) to identify students with the high probability of not graduating and who may be potential dropouts;
  • Collaborate with feeder middle school(s) to utilize the components of DEWS to identify middle school students with the high probability of not graduating;
  • Conduct an analysis that focuses on data for individual students and categories of students such as:
    • State Standardized Tests: MCAS/PARCC
    • National College Entrance Exams: PSAT SAT and ACT
    • Local Records: attendance behavior teacher conferences grade retention academic history/course history credits earned;
  • Develop and implement individual intervention strategies to increase the likelihood that these students will stay in school and graduate;
  • Work with students to develop a graduation and achievement plan to include the best program to meet academic and postsecondary goals;
  • Track the progress of individual and categories of students as they progress toward graduation;
  • Identify and link students and parents/guardians to community based agencies for youth at risk of not graduating;
  • Conduct team meetings among high school faculty and staff and counselors to develop action steps to improve individual student and categories of students to improve the transition rate to high school;
  • Identify students who have dropped out and encourage them to reengage in school (dropout recovery).
  • Participate in district level Graduation Coach Collaboration Meetings and attend MA DESE Workgroup Meetings;
  • Provide and/or submit reports to the Building Principal and Executive Officer for Student Services on the graduation status of seniors and annual report on assigned caseload.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Masters Degree in a related field (i.e. Counseling Psychology Education Social Work)
  2. Must hold a teaching license as a School Counselor or School Adjustment Counselor.
  3. Working knowledge of appropriate strategies for reducing barriers to learning and behaviors that put students at risk of not graduating from high school
  4. Ability to analyze develop implement and track intervention plans and strategies
  5. Knowledge of and the ability to analyze data including that available from the Districts Student Information System College and Career Planning Portal Strategic Plan Data Warehouse MA Department of Education Elementary and Secondary Education and from other sources.
  6. Must have an understanding of the multiplicity of community based social services available in the community to support students at risk of not graduating
  7. Knowledge of alternative education opportunities e.g. High School Completion Program Online Credit Recovery (Edgenuity) Extended Learning and Virtual High School (VHS).
  8. Ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues
  9. Ability to work with collaborative teams
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with students parents administrators and staff
  11. Excellent organizational skills
  12. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
