Job Description

The position of Director of Student Support Services was established for the purpose/s of planning coordinating implementing directing and maintaining the districts instructional programs including Special Education programs and services; district and building school improvement processes and plans; State and Federal programs professional development and staffing to ensure programs and services are achieved within budget.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent or designee

Work Calendar: 210 Days

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in administration with curriculum development experience.
  • Special Education Director certification or a willingness to complete requirements to receive full or temporary approval as a director in special education.
  • Valid Michigan general education teaching certificate; and
  • certificate in at least one 1 area of special education preferred.

EXPERIENCE: At least five 5 years of jobrelated experience.

SUPERVISES: Administrative and Special Education/Atrisk personnel (e.g. Psychologists Resource Room Social Workers Speech and Language Therapists Teacher Consultant Title I and 31a personnel etc. in a professional manner for the purpose of conducting objectives within area of responsibility.

JOB GOAL: To perform their assigned duties in such a manner to maintain the best possible educational programs and services for students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Attends various meetings (e.g. Board meetings county/tricounty director meeting training hearings IEPs etc. for the purpose of providing direction and/or receiving information.
  • Coordinate implement analyze and interpret local state and federal assessment programs (i.e. DRA NWEA MStep PSAT SAT etc. for the purpose of measuring student growth.
  • Collaborates with other district personnel for the purpose of initiating implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
  • Develops proposals innovative programs budgets and grant opportunities for the purpose of meeting identified district goals as well as state and federal mandates.
  • Facilitates meetings (i.e. IEP 504 processes etc. (e.g. due process hearings district liaison special education parent groups etc. for the purpose of implementing and maintaining district Special Education programs and support services in compliance with local state and federal requirements.
  • Implements assigned programs and/or projects for the purpose of conforming to district and state curriculum and/or instructional objectives.
  • Manages grant and general fund account of assigned programs and all related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Manages the Department of Student Support Services for the purpose of delivering services which conform to established local state and federal guidelines.
  • Monitors districtwide and school sitebased Student Support programs and/or projects for the purpose of implementing and achieving objectives within area of responsibility.
  • Manages and monitors the student management systems (e.g. TIEnet PowerSchool BAA etc. for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and compliance with local state and federal pupil accounting guidelines.
  • Participates in meetings workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Performs personnel functions (e.g. interviewing evaluating supervising etc. for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget.
  • Provides ongoing and systematic professional development for administrators and staff for the purpose of program and pupil accounting compliance increasing student achievement and the needs of student placement and staffing allocations.
  • Researches a variety of information for the purpose of providing department leadership implementing best practices improving existing programs and/or developing innovative programs.
  • Supervises staff including administrative special education and atrisk personnel in a professional manner for the purpose of carrying out district objectives within area of responsibility.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for the purpose of improving programs and curriculum for students and staff as well as state/federal compliance.
  • Interpret laws regulations and policies of district local state and federal agencies for the purpose of accountability and compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skillbased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include Microsoft Excel PowerPoint and Word State website portals and written/verbal communication skills.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math including calculations using fractions percents and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledgebased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include PowerSchool TIEnet Michigan Electronic Grant Systems (MEGS) IDEA regulations AS400 etc.
  • ABILITY is required to schedule a considerable number of activities meetings and/or events; routinely gather collate and/or classify data; and consider several factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of jobrelated equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilitybased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include professional leadership communication and conflict resolution.

RESPONSIBILITY. Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; directing other persons within a department large work unit and/or across several small work units; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the jobs functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organizations services.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT. The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50 sitting 25 walking and 25 standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
