Job Description

Position Title: Library Media Technician

Bargaining Unit: Grand Rapids Public Schools Paraprofessional Association (GRPSPA)

Pay Rate: Determined by the collective bargaining agreement

Earning Days: Determined by the negotiated calendar

GRPS MISSION: Our mission is to ensure that all students are educated selfdirected and productive members of society.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The assignment will involve travel to and from buildings. In most cases the assignment will include locations within a geographical area. At times individuals may be assigned to other schools to cover absences and/or special events. At any point in time location assignments may be changed.

Responsible for the preservation of the assigned libraries this includes stocking books and circulation material working with the building principal to ensure appropriate neatness and appearance of the library materials. Performs a variety of computer and clerical functions necessary for the maintenance of a pleasant and organized learning environment in which students can take full advantage of library resources. This position will report to the Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Learning.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for support of the Literacy paraprofessional at each assigned school to ensure the library is maintained
  • Responsible for Google Classroom and forms LibraryWorld Follett Titlewave Sora and specific research databases training and support
  • Practical tasks i.e. assist in organization of library facility and keeping environment attractive and conducive to learning
  • Secure set up and operate materials and equipment for trainings
  • Support and maintain libraries with occasional staff vacancies i.e. book circulation textbook distribution shelve books collection book repair assist staff and students with book selection inventory
  • Responsible for filling specific requests via Google Forms from staff i.e. textbooks novels library supplies barcodes printed for libraries and barcode adjustments for textbooks
  • Responsible for the automation process and distribution of incoming textbooks and novels
  • Responsible for the annual inventory of district textbooks and assist with reconciliation of records
  • Attend meetings and trainings as assigned
  • Interact with coworkers administration students parents and the community in positive supportive and cooperative ways
  • Remain current with department technologies
  • Assist with districtwide staff and student trainings of the Sora eBook system and research databases
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Ability to travel between district facilities during the workday
  • Inperson attendance is essential for job duties

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have
    • A) completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (at least 60 credits); or
    • B) obtained an associates or higher degree; or
    • C) achieved a passing score on an MDE approved assessment
  • Passing of District assessment required
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with students parents staff and community in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Demonstrated experience working with all students
  • Demonstrated good attendance and punctuality
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated organization ability attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment
  • Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of the team
  • Demonstrated computer knowledge and proficiency

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated successful working experience with LibraryWorld computer automation program preferred

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven aptitude to work under pressure and meet deadlines as required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student staff and other sensitive materials

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand walk sit use hands to finger handle or feel reach with hands and arms climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl talk hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds due to the handling of heavy boxes and moving of rolling bookshelves. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and ability to adjust/focus. Must have the ability to travel between district facilities during the workday.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety wellbeing and work output of students.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to compare analyze communicate both orally and in writing copy coordinate instruct compute synthesize evaluate use interpersonal skills compile and negotiate.
