Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Program Director assists the Program Director with administering and maintaining an educational environment aligned with the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Pathways to Excellence conducive to educating residents/fellows in each of the ACGME competency areas.

  • Fills in for Program Director when absent.

  • Mentors teaches and evaluates medical students interns residents/fellows and faculty.

  • Assesses learner competencies assisting in mediation and remediation.

  • Evaluates and manages medical patients in clinical learning environments including GI Endoscopy.

  • Conducts and promotes research and scholarly activities.

  • Upholds commitment and dedication to the education of resident/fellow physicians in all competencies pertinent to the subspecialty serving as role models of professionalism.

  • Contributes scholarly activities to help maintain national ACGME accreditation of the program.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Professor

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Completion of an appropriate residency and fellowship training program approved by the ACGME or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

  • Board Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in Gastroenterology.

  • Current Hawaii medical license by date of hire.

  • Demonstrated ability in teaching and patient care.

  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

  • Organizational skills and leadership abilities.


Associate Professor

Same as Assistant Plus

  • Four years in the rank of Assistant Professor or four years of other medical experience or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other experience or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another medical school of recognized standing.

  • Proven ability to teach medical students residents or fellows.

  • Evidence of excellent patient care in a collaborative environment.

  • Evidence of effective research and scholarly activity (i.e. recent publications in peerreviewed journals or regional/national presentations quality initiatives or medical education administration.

  • Experience in academic and/or clinical program administration.

  • Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the clinical specialty

  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues.

  • Experience functioning in a complex system of multiple organizations and stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and ACGME requirements.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and evaluation.

  • Eligible for credentialing with local Hospital Health Systems.

  • 13 years of experience directly related to teaching clinical and research endeavors.

  • Familiarity with curriculum development and evaluation provider of educational activities as required by the LCME ACGME and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

  • Staff physician privileges at teaching medical institution and including upper and lower GI Endoscopy.
