This position is governed by a local union contract.

Responsibilities:

The Combustion Turbine Technician position is intended for an individual with extensive experience and advanced subject matter knowledge of combustion turbine aero derivative technology. This knowledge can be gained through on the job experience and a combination of a college/technical training. Connecticut Jet Power LLC consists of eight Sites with eight simple cycle Pratt & Whitney FT4 Combustion Turbines.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to;

  • Operates and maintains simple cycle combustion turbinegenerators and auxiliary equipment
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental permits and regulations on a continuous basis and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Make decisions based on the principle of safety and environmental over production
  • Carry a cell phone with remote unit alarms start notifications
  • Understand and respond to alarms
  • Be available to work on off hours and weekends
  • Respond as directed to remote sites during off hours and weekends
  • Installs adjusts maintains analyzes issues and repairs all mechanical hydraulic pneumatic electrical and electronic equipment and circuitry associated with the sites
  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret operating data
  • Repairs installs tests removes and replaces motors generators rectifiers batteries transformers regulators circuit breakers disconnecting switches instruments controls relays communication equipment lighting arrestors and other related equipment with control apparatus
  • Performs mechanical maintenance installation and repair on site equipment structures and buildings.
  • Performs pipe fitting pipe covering insulating incidental machining incidental welding brazing flame and arc cutting
  • Communicate information clearly both orally and written
  • Communicate conditions of site equipment to Plant Management and others as needed
  • Communicate unit status to commercial operations in a timely manner
  • Directs contractors and acts as contractor liaison
  • Performs periodic fuel oil inventories and sampling; monitors fuel oil deliveries
  • Assist others as needed
  • Works to support troubleshooting maintenance or electrical when required
  • Understand and execute the equipment LOTO procedure
  • Operate various systems to receive analyze comprehend and input data
  • Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments recording charts annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by operational procedures
  • Implement Emergency Procedures as needed
  • Perform maintenance and operational activities as directed
  • Performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to offloading fuel trucks clearing snow
  • Take record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate various switches and valves and the effect each has on the total operation
  • Meet physical requirements of the job such as performing tasks while standing walking climbing (stairs and ladders) and squatting
  • Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment and maintain operating licenses
  • Makes rounds and takes readings on equipment when operating and in reserve mode.
  • Inspects and cleans equipment routinely
  • Maintain logbook of all important station operations maintenance and station events
  • Input unit status (Events) into POWER GADS system on computer
  • Trains and cross trains to support NRG Connecticut Facilities which will be determined at a later date
  • Required to train and teach others as needed

The successful candidate must:

  • Be able to perform effectively in a team environment without close supervision
  • Physically must have the ability to climb stairs ladders and get down under equipment.
  • Have the ability to work well with and through others inside and outside of NRG.
  • Use discretion concerning confidential and sensitive company information; demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment high voltage electrical equipment to 345KV high noise areas.
  • Work in all temperatures and climate conditions. Some temperatures can be extreme.
  • Respond in a timely basis when contacted to work after normal working hours as needed
  • Performance of duties may response to calls 24 hours/day seven days/week

Requirements

Job Experience Abilities and Skills Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Give 5 years experience in electric generation facilities
  • Six 6 years of experience in an I&C Electrical or Mechanical role within a generating station or with combustion turbine
  • Must demonstrate a working knowledge of electronic and complex wiring and schematic diagrams (electrical and mechanical)
  • Must possess working knowledge of various shop tools and equipment; may be required perform basic arc welding and gas burning.
  • Must possess a high degree of analytical ability and excessive independent judgment
  • Requires operation of a Company motor vehicle
  • Must be computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Word Excel and email

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten 10 years experience in electric generation facilities
  • Field service experience on Pratt & Whitney FT4 combustion turbines

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to work alone at remote sites
  • Must possess a high degree of analytical ability and excessive independent judgment
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Must be physically able to walk for an extended periods of time during various weather conditions
  • Must be physically able to climb and squat to access equipment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in 3 way communication and the Phonetic alphabet
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment and perform effectively without supervision.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work alone or in a small group
  • Must be able to maintain a positive and professional working relationship with others and work in a team environment.
  • Requires working independently
  • Requires working outdoors in various weather conditions all equipment is located outdoors
  • Requires standing sitting walking kneeling twisting climbing stairs and ladders and entering plant equipment to access inspect or collect data on plant equipment.
  • Requires operation of a personal computer.
  • May be required to work around rotating and energized equipment hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Occasionally requires lifting as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
