Job Summary
The University of Kentucky School of Music is seeking a fulltime 9month tenureeligible Assistant Professor of Musicology to join our outstanding faculty in the UK School of Music with a start date of August 2025. This appointment holds a standard teaching expectation of 2 courses per semester and will contribute to both the graduate and undergraduate curricula typically teaching survey courses as part of the music history sequence required of all undergraduate music majors (Music History II; and Music History III 1900present). In addition this candidate will interface with music graduate students in musicology music theory and performance. Applications received by December 18th will be assured full consideration. However applications will be accepted until the position is filled. We are seeking applicants with a research area of nineteenth and/or twentiethcentury music. While we are open to any research focus we especially invite applications from those with expertise in one or more of the following: opera popular music musical theater issues of music and gender sexuality race ethnicity and/or disability sound studies African American music and contemporary music. The committee welcomes transnational hemispheric and global frameworks as well as postmodern methodologies. We seek a vibrant effective teacher and a dedicated promising scholar who exhibits a high degree of professional integrity and a commitment to a vision for inspiring learning and ensuring the wellbeing of students from a variety of backgrounds. The successful candidate will be expected to build a research profile consistent with School of Music standards and participate in shared governance within the School of Music the College of Fine Arts and the University as well as the professional community. Responsibilities/Anticipated DOE : The projected distribution of effort for this position is 50 teaching (a 2:2 teaching expectation) 40 creative activity/research and 10 service but may vary depending on the candidates responsibilities. Candidates must hold a PhD by the time of employment and should have at least one year of teaching experience at the college level. Teach classes in general music history / musicology according to School need and expertise graduate seminars in areas of specialization and interest courses for both majors and nonmajors including survey courses in Western music history and other focused topics (opera literature symphonic literature special topics graduate seminars graduate research methods and musicology proseminar). Contribute actively to research public outreach and service to the profession; serve on graduate student committees and advise Ph.D. dissertations; share in division responsibilities and in service to the School of Music.
