JOB SUMMARY
For over 40 years Kennedy Catholic has employed a fulltime Elementary Band Director in
partnership with our regional Catholic grade schools. This established and wellregarded
program has introduced instrumental music to thousands of students since its inception
many of whom have continued to play music in high school and beyond. This position
oversees the elementary band programs in elementary Catholic schools in the region
surrounding Kennedy Catholic and provides regular instruction at seven schools over the
course of a standard week. The Elementary Band Director reports to the Kennedy Catholic
High School Band Director but also works closely with the principals at each of the schools.
This position provides a unique opportunity to cultivate young musicians in a faithbased
educational environment fostering a love of music and developing instrumental
proficiency. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching beginning and intermediate
band students strong classroom management skills and the ability to inspire students
through engaging and dynamic instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
Bachelors degree in Music Education Instrumental Music or a related field
(Masters degree preferred)
Valid Washington State Teaching Certification (or ability to obtain)
Experience teaching band or instrumental music at the elementary/middle school
level
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in teaching various band instruments (woodwinds brass percussion)
Strong classroom management and instructional skills
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education
Experience directing student ensembles and organizing performances
Work with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and learning abilities
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners
Be flexible and resourceful
Be organized and an effective communicator with all members of the school
communities
Ability to travel between school sites (reliable transportation required)
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple school communities
RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop refine and implement a sequential band curriculum aligned with national
music education standards
Recruit and retain students for participation in the elementary band program at
each partner location
Teach beginning and intermediate band students at multiple elementary school
locations. Each school has two bands Beginning Band (Grade 5 and School Band
(Grades 68 which are 45 minute classes twice per week
Provide group and individual instruction in woodwinds brass and percussion
Organize coordinate and conduct performances/concert dates for each school
every year 23 concerts per school)
Organize Elementary Band Festival at the end of the school year to be held at
Kennedy Catholic High School
Organize and direct the expanded band program to include:
o Honor Band (grades 68 by audition) Rehearsals start in February and occur
roughly twice monthly on Saturdays and/or Sundays at Kennedy Catholic
o Summer Band Program for one week in July coordinated with the High
School Band Director
Manage band equipment music libraries and instrument inventories as including
scheduling and staffing rental days in the fall with current partner (Music & Arts)
Communicate regularly with parents school staff and administrators regarding
student progress and program goals
Foster a positive and supportive classroom environment
Oversee the band programs at all partner Catholic elementary schools and consult
with parttime teachers as necessary to ensure program alignment (currently eight
schools)
Provide a billing enrollment list for each school via email at the end of the month
from SeptemberMay and deliver a hard copy to the Kennedy Catholic Business
Office
Represent Kennedy Catholic to the larger Catholic schools communities
Submit an 8th grade student roster to the Kennedy Catholic Band Director and
Admissions Team
Work with the Kennedy Catholic Band Director as needed
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary is dependent upon experience certification and education according to
Kennedy Catholics faculty compensation schedule (for theschool year a
teachers salary ranged between $54333 and $103123
