Summary

East Side House (ESH) founded in 1891 is a 501(c) 3 organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. ESH has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more selfsufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.

ESHs Youth AfterSchool Academy a literacyfocused after school program for students in grades 6 through 8 from highpoverty communities in Bronx NY. ESH managed After School Programs offer students additional learning time in a fun engaging and safe environment. Students are offered a wide variety of activities including homework help robotics team sports karate dance and music. Educational methods are used to build and reinforce the skills needed to reach New York State standards for promotion and graduation.

The Group Leaders primary responsibility is to design and lead enrichment activities for students. We are seeking creative professionals with experience working with the youth in the following (but not limited to) areas: Music visual arts media technology dance sports and recreation health awareness and community leadership.

Primary Functions

Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan implement and document successful educational recreation youth leadership and community service and arts activities with schoolaged children.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures in a proactive manner making the safety and care of children your primary focus.
  • Build a positive relationship with each afterschool participant in your care and foster positive connections between engage with children at all times with the goal of fostering the positive development of each child and the group.
  • Conduct yourself as a professional and representative of the agency with school staff parents children and anyone else with whom you come into contact in your role.
  • Effectively manage assigned and enforce progressive discipline policy.
  • Assist in enrollment recording and submitting daily attendance records and any other required documents to Director.
  • Inspect all facilities equipment and supplies and be sure all are accounted for and put away at the end of each day.
  • Work as a part of a collaborative team providing support to any specialist implementing activities.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of staff or member development including biweekly supervision team meetings preservice training and an additional at least 15 hours of training during the school year.

Required Skills/Experience

  • Minimum High School Diploma
  • Some college preferred.
  • Must have experience working with young children in a structured youth program of middle school preferably in a racially ethically and socioemotionally diverse urban community.
  • Possess the ability to engage and lead children in small group activities in your area of specialty; strong communication skills strong organizational skills excellent judgment ability to work in a team in a variety of environments.
  • Candidates possessing skills in foreign languages visual arts music or performing arts are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Bilingual is a must.

Expected Work Schedule

This is a seasonal parttime position working up to 20 hours a week. The Extended Day Program operatesLS1AM2 on school days from 2:00pm 5:30pm and occasionally on nonschool days from 8:00am 6:00pm. The program operates MondayFriday only. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESHs needs.

  • Staff Exclusion List (SEL) Clearance
  • Physical examination and TB test
  • COVID Vaccine

Required Online trainings

  • Mandated Reporter 2 hours
  • Foundations of Health & Safety Training 5 hours

Supervisory Responsibility

This role has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.

No travel.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role will also require the ability to lift files open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
