PRIMARY PURPOSE
The purpose of the position is to develop competent assistants who will become Certified Dental Assistants. The fulltime instructor will be tasked with establishing a balance between academic rigor and practical application. The program will be supported by an active advisory committee. It is a priority to maintain college standards of professionalism collegiality record keeping and instruction within the Allied Health department.

Description of Essential Functions

Instruction 80 of Time)

  1. Teach assigned dental assisting classes prepare distribute and utilize instructional support materials including syllabi supplementary materials instructional media and other appropriate devices. Facilitate learning and interact with students in lecture clinical and small group settings.
  2. Teach course information to students in groups and individually using instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and to the subject (e.g. lecture demonstration group discussion technologyenhanced delivery computerassisted delivery and distance delivery). Must be able to explain and deliver materials in a variety of ways to meet the needs of a broad range of learning abilities.
  3. Curriculum development and modification by working with the Instructional Dean and other department faculty members in developing or modifying course content course objectives standards and instructional methods degree and certificate programs.
  4. Function as program lead. In cooperation with faculty utilize competencybased learning principles focused on both program and student outcomes reflected in assignments testing criteria teaching aids and reference materials. Develop accurate assessment measures that help students demonstrate proficiency. Evaluate and maintain records of student progress and provide feedback to students. Serve as role model for students including professional behavior. Provide academic advising to students as outlined in the faculty bargaining agreement.

Other Institutional Duties 20 of Time)

  1. Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of subject area(s) and teaching techniques through a plan of professional development. Attend conferences and professional meetings.
  2. Participate in committees and other institutional duties as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  3. This position may assist the Office of Institutional Effectiveness in qualitative research. These duties would be guided by the Director of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and the Vice President of Instruction. This will require knowledge of research design sampling modeling statistical analysis and data interpretation which may include creating reports and presentation of results and recommendations and require experience analyzing and preparing data sets for IPEDS and other required official college reporting. Strong analytical and organizational skills will be required for these duties. Additional release time may be granted for this service to the institution.
  4. This position may advise students as assigned. In this case the faculty will meet with advisees at least once each term to assist students in determining goals inform students of program and degree requirements review student schedules and progress and refer students to needed services. The faculty will maintain records of advising sessions to include dates of meetings student major or goals student progress and other pertinent information.
  5. All faculty are expected to participate in and provide information necessary for the recruitment and retention of students into their programs the marketing of courses programs and the college. This may include travel and working with students and faculty in high schools colleges and other institutions and public and private agencies.
  6. Support College leadership in developing departmental goals and objectives as part of the institutions continuous improvement cycle; this includes participating in the college wide accreditation process by preforming departmental planning assessment and improvement to meet core theme objectives and contribute to mission fulfillment.
  7. Attend student convocation ceremony at the end of each academic year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associates degree with current Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) with occupational experience in the application of dentistry principles.

Minimum two 2 years full time dental assisting experience or supervision required.

  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives and abilities
  • Ability to evaluate student progress both empirically and holistically and to prescribe and develop curriculum materials for individuals and classes.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English with others both orally and in written form which includes the ability to restate at various language levels to simplify and to use demonstrations which relate to previous knowledge and concrete experience.
  • Ability to use instructional delivery methods which reflect an adult orientation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with department members and members of the college community in meetings and on projects.
  • Ability to review understand apply and share concepts presented in training programs conferences and/or professional literature.
  • Willingness to teach at various hours as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in a related health field

Broad clinical and teaching experience

Previous experience in health care accreditation

Bilingual a plus


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE
Oregon Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certificate

Current First Aid and CPR Training

Must reside in the State of Oregon. Southwestern Oregon Community College is not able to support out of state employment at this time.
