What Youll Do:
Under general supervision manages construction projects inspects and prioritizes needed construction modification and building repairs; coordinates projects with departments coordinates the development of project specifications and requests for proposal; oversees the construction of projects and assures contractor compliance; coordinates space needs surveys and reports; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This class is distinguished from the Deputy Public Works DirectorFacilities Management in that the latter has responsibility for the facilities management function. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Participates in assessments and prioritization of construction rehabilitation and remodeling projects under consideration.
- Coordinates development of requests for bids; conducts prebid conferences participates in vendor selections.
- Coordinates construction projects prepares change orders monitors project compliance and schedule.
- Prepares and participates in the preparation of architectural design work including developing project requirements master plans plan layouts schematics preliminary plans complete working drawings specifications and/or cost estimates.
- Coordinates development of request for proposals for space acquisition including lease and alterations needed to meet the needs of requesting departments.
- Maintains project records including progress reports financial reports and timelines.
- Evaluates space needs prepares recommendations monitors acquisition and needed modifications to space.
- Reviews drawings and specifications prepared by others for compliance with federal state and County standards laws and regulations.
- Serves as point of contact regarding construction and space needs for County departments.
- Prepares detailed progress reports and agenda items to present to the Board of Supervisors and others.
- Represents the County at meetings with state and local officials and/or others regarding County building projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of facility design construction remodeling and rehabilitation. Principles and practices of public agency contract negotiation administration project management and evaluation.
- Applicable federal state and local laws regulations standards and policies of design and construction including those specific to public buildings.
- Structural mechanical and electrical systems as related to institutional commercial and office buildings.
- Principles and methods of cost estimating and evaluating appropriate building materials for projects.
- Principles of budgetary administration and control.
- Business information systems principles including design and related software applications.
Skill in:- Preparing architectural plans and specifications for major construction and renovation projects.
- Reading and interpreting engineering and architectural plans and specifications.
- Preparing construction materials and labor estimates for projects.
- Managing organizing and coordinating the various components of projects.
- Directing and maintaining multiple projects simultaneously consisting of a variety of contractual activity in multiple areas.
- Preparing comprehensive technical reports and specifications and related business correspondence.
- Communicating effectively and tactfully with the public staff other agencies engineering and architectural firms contractors developers the general public and others.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:- Must possess a valid California drivers license.
- Must possess a valid license to practice as an Engineer or Architect in the State of California.
Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is: Three years of increasingly responsible experience as a professional engineer architect or construction project manager at least two years of which have been on major building construction projects for a public agency and included project supervision.WORKING CONDITIONS & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six 6 months but could be up to one 1 year. All designated safety employees serve a oneyear probationary period.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Workerrelated training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
