The Department of English at California State University Long Beach invites applications for a tenuretrack faculty position in the area of 20th and 21stcentury British literature with expertise in postcolonial Anglophone literatures. Preferred areas of specialization include for instance African and African diasporic South Asian Caribbean or Arab and Arab diasporic literatures written in Englishpostcolonial theorydecolonialtheory and/or race studies.
RequiredQualifications:
Ph.D. in English or closely related field at time of application or completion of the doctoral degree by August 1 2020.
Specialization in 20th and 21stcentury British literature with demonstrated interest in postcolonial Anglophone literatures.
Demonstrated potential for or evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Demonstrated potential for or evidence of successful research and publication.
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
PreferredQualifications:
Experience in teaching courses in 20th and 21stcentury British literature including postcolonial Anglophone literatures.
Expertise in African and African diasporic South Asian Caribbean and/or Arab and Arab diasporic literatures written in English.
Ability to teach British literature across the 20thand 21stcenturies including for instance modernist realist postmodern exile utopian/dystopian and/or genre literature in novel poetry drama and nonfiction.
Ability to teach critical theory and its histories (e.g. postcolonial theorydecolonicaltheory race studies gender theory New Historicism ecocriticism etc. particularly as they have shaped the study of 20th and 21stcentury British literature.
Potential for developing campuswide interdisciplinary links with other departments and programs such as Africana Studies Asian and AsianAmerican Studies Comparative World Literature International Studies or History.
Potential for developing servicelearning courses pursuing communitybased research and/or engaging in other highimpact pedagogical practices.
Duties:
Teach undergraduateandgraduatelevel courses in 20th and 21stcentury British literature postcolonial Anglophone literatures and other areas of British literature including introductory surveys genre courses special topics courses and other core courses within the major.
Develop new courses in areas reflecting the applicants expertise in postcolonial Anglophone literatures and emergent critical trends in the study of 20th and 21stcentury British literature.
Develop and engage in research scholarly and creative activities in 20th and 21stcentury British literature including postcolonial Anglophone literatures leading to conference presentations and publications
Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Supervise Masters theses and grade final comprehensive examinations.
Serve on department college and university committees within the shared governance structure.
Participate in service to the department college university community and profession.
