The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the role of Psychology Associatefor the Clallam Bay Corrections Center (CRCC)located in Clallam Bay WA. This is a fulltime position with a day shift schedule.

The mission of the Clallam Bay Corrections Center Health Services Department is to provide patients with quality medical dental and mental health services consistent with the provisions of the Department of Corrections Offender Health Plan processes protocols and procedures.

As an integral member of the Mental Health Team and reporting to the CBCC Psychologist 4 this person will enhance prison and community safety by making possible effective functioning by mentally ill incarcerated individuals. This will be within programs offered by DOC.

This position will lead efforts to develop effective intervention strategies as part of the expansion of AMEND principles and the Washington Way team. They will be part of the team to train and support staff in the implementation of this effort.

This person will support effectiveness of correctional programs by facilitating successful transition into the community by incarcerated individuals with mental health needs.

This person will enhance safety of prison and community by teaching adaptive skills to incarcerated individuals and by teaching mental health information to staff.

CBCC has an operating capacity of 858 male individuals located on the point of the Olympic Peninsula. Located in Clallam Bay WA. It is 50 miles west of Port Angeles and looks out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Vancouver Island.

Duties

  • Washington Way Team Member
    1. Participate on the Washington Way Team. Assist in the development and implementation of Washington Way principles in the operation of the restrictive housing unit and other locations at WSP. This may include staff training participation as a member of the Resource Team and direct care services for identified individuals
  • Mental Health Assessment and Treatment of Incarcerated Individuals
    1. Work independently and cooperatively within the mental health team to provide mental health assessments and treatment of incarcerated individuals per the Offender Health Plan Protocols and DOC 03446 (Rev. 10/31/22 Page 2 of 6 DOC 820.200 processes and procedures.
    2. Intake of incarcerated individuals referred for mental health services. This includes documentation of problem; background and treatment plan; obtaining Informed Consent for Mental Health Treatment; obtaining collateral information from within and outside DOC; referral to additional mental health services (e.g. psychiatric); and followup as deemed appropriate.
    3. Evaluates diagnoses and determines mental health acuity and emotional adjustment as well as treatment need of incarcerated individuals (including but not limited to the completion of MHA/ MHUs. Tx plans SRAs etc..
    4. Provides direct psychotherapeutic (individual and group) services to incarcerated individuals based upon Evidenced Based Practices and Principles.
    5. Provides consultation to unit and custody staff with regard to treatment recommendations precautions program planning release planning and handling specific behavior disturbances. Consults and staffs cases with the supervisor.
    6. Follows documentation expectations per policy and standards of care.
  • Crisis intervention
    1. Be available for communication from DOC staff and/or incarcerated individuals regarding urgent or emergency mental health situations. Provides assessment of the crisis. Plans and executes interventions including followup after resolution to assure stability is established. Includes communication with DOC staff involved with the patient who have a need to know.
  • Trainings meetings and other duties as assigned
    1. Participates in staff meetings for communication and coordination of mental health services. This includes peer review/ quality assurance and CQIP projects. Receives training as approved/ required by DOC includes but is not limited to annual training to staff such as Suicide Prevention and LMS. Participates in MDTs Mental Health Duty Officer and may provide Annual InService Suicide Prevention instruction. Provide informal education to staff and incarcerated individuals on topics related to the promotion of mental health within the prison and in the community.
  • Transition and Release
    1. Coordinates and facilitates transition and release needs of mentally ill and/or emotionally disturbed incarcerated individuals with outside agencies and community services in conjunction with the PSW3.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Washington State Mental Health Counselor License or eligible to apply for and maintain a Licensed Agency Affiliated Counselor license (LAAC)
AND
Masters degree in Psychology from an accredited school or department of psychology whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and one year of supervised work experience providing direct psychological services in a mental health facility or like agency. AND at least one year of experience providing individual or group therapy to individuals with mental illness and Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy theory and techniques.
OR
Master or Doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy behavioral sciences mental health counseling or social work from an accredited graduate school whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and two years of supervised work experience providing direct psychological services in a mental health facility or like agency.

*Note:An Agency Affiliated counselor may only provide counseling services as part of his or her employment for a recognized agency. Applicants for an agency affiliated counselor credential who apply within 7 days of employment may provide services within the agency for up to 60 days while the Department of Health processes your application.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited school or department of Psychology or masters degree in psychology and two years of supervised post masters degree experience.
  • At least one year of experience working independently and effectively to develop and provide individual and group therapies.
  • Experience linking clients with resources within institutions and/or the community.
  • Experience working in a collaborative fashion as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Official Washington State Licensure as a Mental Health Clinician.
