We invite applications for a fully funded fulltime 15years Postdoctoral position. The successful candidate will work as researcher for the project Mapping the Archaeological PreColumbian Heritage of South America (MAPHSA) led by Prof. Marco Madella at the CASEs (Culture Archaeology and SocioEcological Dynamics) research group and she/he will be a member of the newly established UPF Centre for Digital Humanities at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

The project will draw from archival work remote sensing and onground survey to produce the first leading integrated database for the preColumbian archaeological heritage of South America that will be Open Access available on a geospatial relational database and serve as the primary resource for heritage protection and research repository for the continent.

The tasks and responsibilities of this position are as follows:

Compile archaeological data from Brazil and/or Colombia based on publications and heritage agency databases;

Integrate the data into the projects database;

Systematically analyze remote sensing data (satellite imagery) from selected areas in Brazil and/or Colombia to identify potential new sites and assess the condition of previously recorded sites;

Develop predictive models of site distribution using environmental data;

Liaise with project partners responsible for automating endangered site detection to provide them with archaeological data and feedback.

Profile of candidates

PhD in Archaeology;

Experience in spatial analysis of archaeological data;

Expertise in ArcGIS/QGIS/GRASS;

Expertise in digital archaeology;

Experience in fieldwork;

Experience in remote sensing.

Experience in field topography.

Experience with delivering training in the above subjects.

Experience of having worked with a broad chronological span.

Knowledge of English and Spanish;

The Postdoctoral contract is regulated by a labour contract for research staff at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. It is a fixedterm fulltime contract. The gross annual value of the stipend would be of approximately 31.04412with an estimated duration of 1.5 years.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a highly international research group in one of the best universities in Spain. The project will allow for further training of the personnel in GIS software spatial analysis and spatial statistic as well as working in a multinational highly stimulating research environment.

The successful candidate will have a working space at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in the Merc Rodoreda building Campus de la Ciutadella in a shared office with other members of the group.

Selection criteria

The selection process will consider the previous extensive experience of the applicant with archaeological or any other types of databases.

The selection process will be divided in two phases.

1. The first phase will consist of an evaluation of the merits of each candidate according to the submitted documents and the presence of the candidates will not be necessary.

The evaluation of the different candidates will be based on the following criteria (out of a total of 24 points):

a) Experience in spatial analysis of archaeological data 4 points);

b) Expertise in ArcGIS/QGIS/GRASS 4 points);

c) Expertise in digital archaeology 4 points);

d) Experience in fieldwork and field topography 4 points);

e) Experience in remote sensing 4 points).

f) Experience with delivering training in the above subjects and having worked with a broad chronological span 4 points).

2. Candidates who have obtained at least 20 points in the first phase will participate in the second phase which will consist of a personal interview that will be scored up to a total of 26 points.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with the Selection Committee (in person or online) which will be conducted in both English and Spanish.

The minimum score to pass the selection (phase 1 and phase 2 process is 40 points.
