Position Description for Mancos School District Mancos Colorado
The Mancos School District Mancos Colorado Board of Education is seeking a highly qualified Superintendent. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position July 1 2025.
McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C. Executive Recruitment and Development in association with the Colorado Association of School Boards has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the board of education in identifying and screening the candidates.
Enrollment: 495
Location: Mancos Colorado is a small vibrant community located in the southwestern corner of the state nestled between Durango and Cortez along Highway 160. The region is known as the Four Corners because it is the only place in the United States where four statesArizona New Mexico Utah and Coloradomeet.
Situated at approximately 7000 feet in elevation the Mancos River Valley and the surrounding school district experience a highdesert climate with mountain foothills. The town receives an average of 16 inches of rain and approximately 47 inches of snowfall per year. This unique geography makes Mancos a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts offering a wide range of recreational activities such as fishing hiking camping cycling and crosscountry skiing. The town is bordered by the La Plata Mountains to the east and Mesa Verde National Park to the west enhancing its appeal to residents and tourists alike.
The Mancos Valley is home to approximately 3400 residents. Despite its small size Mancos has a rich history a strong sense of community and a commitment to education. The Mancos School District educates approximately 495 students from preschool through 12th grade providing a supportive and closeknit learning environment that prioritizes academic achievement.
The Qualifications
The candidate must have the background skills and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The board has identified the following desired characteristics:
- Possesses excellent communication listening and people skills
- Has a strong fair and consistent leadership style
- Brings a broad PK12 teaching experience
- Administrative experience and educational systems understanding
- Has a sound knowledge of Colorado school law and finances
- Committed to student success and support
- Understanding of curriculum development instructional strategies and student achievement improvement
- Ability to build and maintain a positive district culture and strong team leadership
- Experiences with project based learning preferred
Additional Qualifications:
- Principal License required
- MA or Higher in Education preferred
- Teacher and principal experience preferred
- Previous superintendent experience preferred
- Ability to obtain superintendent license or administrative license
