Job Description

Permanent Substitute Special Education Teacher Middle School (to cover a leave of absence)2024/2025

School:

Marshall Simonds Middle School

Positions:

Permanent Substitute Special Education Teacher

Job Goal:The special education teacher coordinates and provides programming for children with disabilities instruction in academic social language motor selfregulation leisure and life skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assess the capabilities and skills of each assigned student for instruction and seek means to assist each student to learn effectively in the area assigned.

2. Design and implement programs using pullout/inclusion for students eligible to receive Special Education services

a. This includes but is not limited to academic social/emotional behavioral and activities of

daily living

b. Collect data and use data to create specially designed plans and guide instruction

3. Conduct evaluations under the Special Education Laws and in such a manner as to

a. Review the educationally relevant information on students

b. Design and administer a relevant learning style and achievement assessment

battery

c. Prepare a written report of findings

d. Summarize assessment findings and recommend pertinent educational

strategies/programming at the TEAM meeting which contributes to the

development of anIndividualized Education Program (IEP)

e. Attend TEAM meetings of students evaluated

4. Complete the paperwork process associated with special education including but not limited to

the development of IEPs timelines and progress reports

5. Advise and assist teachers in the diagnostic and remedial measures and specific procedures used

in overcoming learning difficulties or social maladjustments of students. Provides/implements

modifications of curriculum materials to addressthe learning difficulties of students

a. Oversee instructional assistants assigned to your Program

i. Create their schedules to support students

ii. Train instructional assistants on student plans and programs

iii. Collaborate with instructional assistants to develop activities and lessons around targeted

skills

b. Collaborate with general education teachers social worker Team Chairperson School Psychologist

specialists other related service providers and outside agencies consulting with your program to

support your students over all developmental areas

6. Prepare and maintain such records as required or necessary to facilitate a flow of information among

staff and others.

7. Communicate/consult with parents so as to

a. Keep parents informed of student progress

b. Involve parents to the maximum extent possible in efforts directed at IEP goal attainment and

student success

8. Assist with material management of the Special Education program by

a. Aiding in the development of the annual budget by recommending needed supplies

equipment and other materials

b. Requisitioning supplies equipment and materials necessary and available within budget allocations

9. Develop a personal plan for professional development in collaboration with the Building Principal and

Director of Special Education

10. Attend all professional meetings that are scheduled by the Superintendent of Schools or Director of

Special Education or building Principal

11. Ensure that all Massachusetts Special Education Regulations are followed and implemented

12. Perform any other duties as requested by the Director of Special Education

Requirements:

  • Masters degree in special education preferred
  • DESE certification in moderate special needs required
  • Good organizational and communication skills experience in delivering coteaching 1:1 and small group instruction
  • A minimum of three 3 years of experience working with children diagnosed with disabilities as well as leadership experience/skills

Compensation:

$125 per day until the teacher you are covering for comes off the payroll then in accordance with the Burlington Educators Association Unit A contract

Dates:

Approximately April 14 through the remainder of the 2024/2025 school year
