The School of Theatre Television and Film at San Diego State University is seeking a fulltime Assistant Professor with a specialization in Production Design for Film & Television. This position is vital to delivering the curriculum for the Television Film and New Media and the Design and Technology programs within the School. Primary responsibilities include teaching courses in production design including aspects of Film & TV production design and digital design at lower division upper division and graduate levels; collaborating with staff and graduate assistants in the production of studentled television and filmrelated design projects; and collaborating with faculty staff and students to support production design across the Schools various programs.
Other responsibilities include mentoring and advising students in production design supporting their creative and professional growth; providing guidance on industrystandard design software and tools revising and developing the production design curriculum to align with changes in the profession; contributing to graduate and undergraduate portfolio qualifier and capstone reviews; participating in recruitment activities for production design students; promoting the School on local and national levels; and providing service to the university and professional community.

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $77000$80000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidates qualifications and experience and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances. Required qualifications include a terminal degree in production design art direction film production scenic design or a related field demonstrated expertise in film and/or television production design and a commitment to cultivating an inclusive environment and recruiting underrepresented populations within the discipline. Preferred qualifications include demonstrated professional experience in design within the entertainment industry membership in a professional union (such as IATSE or United Scenic Artists USA829 experience teaching at the college or university level experience or a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students familiarity with industrystandard software and design tools knowledge of art architecture or decor history and experience with new technology such as virtual production AI or immersive media.
We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline (b) have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline (c) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students (d) have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research (e) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group (f) have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities (g) have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in crosscultural communication and collaboration and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
