Job Duties

Signon Bonus: Candidates are eligible for signon bonus Up to a $15000 that are new to state service.
$15000 sign on bonus will be awarded to new hires to state service with a oneyear written agreement required.

Who We Are:
Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents (CCCA) is the state psychiatric hospitals operating since 1975 under Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services and provides treatment through multidisciplinary teams of child psychiatrists clinical psychologists nurses social workers activities therapists teachers and behaviorally trained direct care staff. Individual treatment plans are developed for each child.

The programs provide for a full range of individual group family milieu and medication modalities for stabilization and resumption of effective functioning.

CCCA 48bed is a Joint Commission accredited facility located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley within 30 minutes of major university towns and is affiliated with the University of VirginiaDepartment of Psychiatric Medicine and provides a training ground for professionals from other colleges and universities in the fields of nursing social work psychology and activities therapy.

Purpose of position:
We are seeking a skilled compassionate and experienced individual as a Chief Medical Officer to lead the team of psychiatrist primary care providers and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.

Purpose of this position is to serves as Chief Medical Officer of the hospital providing leadership direction management and supervision of the activities of the Medical Staff and hospital clinical program development including facilitywide medical psychiatric and psychosocial programming activities to ensure appropriateness for patient population. Provides leadership to the Medical Staff including the planning implementing and monitoring psychiatric services. Advises Hospital Chief Executive Officer on clinical and administrative matters particularly the psychiatric aspects of patient management quality of care and risk management issues. Provides direct patient care to assigned patients such assignments being an exercise of the Office of the Medical Director.

Candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of:

  • Contemporary developments and techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of mental diseases and disorders for children and adolescents.
  • Considerable knowledge of inpatient psychiatry and recovery principles; and considerable knowledge of administration and management principles and practices related to patient care.
  • Working knowledge of performance improvement and utilization review functions; and fundamental knowledge of principles and practices of general medicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage medical and clinical staff activities within a psychiatric hospital.
  • Develop goals and objective evaluate program effectiveness and interpret governing directives.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership and community partners; analyze a complex health care delivery system and provide general oversight to clinical outcomes.


Candidate will be primarily responsible for:

  • Performance Management for their teams.
  • Provides leadership direction management and supervision for patient care departments including Medical and Psychiatry Services
  • Manages all Hospital Medical/Psychiatric Care.
  • Ensure Compliance with Regulatory Standards including The Joint Commission (TJC) and Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) relative to Medical Services.
  • Serves as Member of Senior Hospital Leadership / Management
  • Serves as Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Minimum Qualifications

  • License from the VA State Board of Medicine. (Employment is contingent upon receipt of license from the VA State Board of Medicine.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration license to prescribe controlled substances
  • Completion of an approved residency in General Psychiatry
  • Experience with diagnostic evaluations medication management and individual and family therapy.
  • Experience in pharmacotherapy practice with emphasis on pediatric populations.
  • Board certification or Board eligible in General Psychiatry.
  • Board certification or Board eligible in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is required.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience with Electronic Health Record preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Veteran or Veteran Spouse.
