Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus School of Dental Medicine welcomes applications from exceptional candidates to serve in a fulltime clinical track faculty in the Department of Community Dentistry and Population Health (CDPH).

CDPH is the department home for the communitybased dental education program known as the Advanced Clinical Training Service (ACTS) Program. The ACTS program is nationally recognized for its success in placing students in over 45 practice locations representing rural and urban underserved areas across the State of Colorado. This program coordinates manages and evaluates dental student communitybased education activities and experiences. The Assistant Program Director is responsible for facilitating program activities within the program mission in accordance with priorities time and budget requirements at the direction of the Program Director. ACTS program operations are also supported by a

The Department is also home for a postdoctoral Geriatric Dental Medicine Fellowship that has didactic and clinical teaching opportunities available. CDPH is also responsible for teaching in multiple areas of Oral Health including health communication behavioral health interprofessional education practice management ethics and public health. A successful candidate will be a clinician educator with some experiential knowledge in providing dental care in community settings mentoring/precepting students be able to perform didactic and clinical education and will have a commitment to working with vulnerable and underserved populations with an emphasis in geriatrics.

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching Essential Function 60

Teaching responsibilities for faculty in the clinical teaching track are focused on collaboratively building and/or maintaining programs within the SDM that provide quality service regarding local state national and international needs in alignment with the mission and strategic plan of the SDM. The primary academic appointment will be in the Department of Community Dentistry and Population Health.

  • CoDirecting and teaching all dentistry courses aligned with communitybased dental education (ACTS) in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.
  • Teaching in some clinical activities that support Senior and Special Care Clinic; teaching in the Geriatric Dental Medicine Fellowship; and teaching in Interprofessional Education.
  • Other teaching opportunities may be available in core didactic and/or clinical CDPH courses (e.g. behavioral health sciences and public health) or in other programmatic areas under development by the Department (e.g. new initiatives focusing on mobile dentistry teledentistry and community oral health services
  • Teaching may include some activities outside of the schools normal operating hours.
  • Managing course materials and records ensuring fulfillment of student learning objectives coordinating and conducting student evaluations and collaborating with other faculty as needed to meet educational objectives.

Administration Essential Function 20

The primary role of the ACTS Assistant Director is to assist the Program Director in daily operations and management of the communitybased dental education program.

  • Supports the planning and implementation of the program goals to fulfill the mission of the ACTS program.
  • Supports the development of student rotation schedules and working with preceptors to monitor student performance at the sites.
  • Participating in periodic site visits to current or prospective sites ensuring that memoranda of understanding are current for each site and working with preceptors to ensure calibration of teaching between all of the communitybased education sites.
  • Performs need assessments evaluates and analyzes individual project and overall program effectiveness; implements appropriate procedures to ensure efficiency and accuracy to fulfill program mission
  • Supports monitoring programmatic education standards.
  • Acts as a resource person for program information.

Service Essential Function 10

The Department of Community Dentistry and Population Health has a robust track record of establishing facilitating and implementing community engagement and service activities off campus. Service responsibilities include service to the assigned program the school and with other responsibilities as negotiated. Service is also expected to support new department initiatives aiming to build clinicalcommunity engagement. Some servicerelated activities may be outside of the traditional school operating hours.

Research/Scholarship Essential Function 10

Research /scholarship responsibilities offer an opportunity to collaborate on and/or initiate programmatic inquiry and scholarship in alignment with SDM mission and vision. Faculty in the Department of Community Dentistry and Population Health have broad research interests in population oral health that includes health disparities and inequities ageing and persons with disabilities as well as informatics and evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Assistant Professor:

  • A DDS/DMD degree from a CODA accredited U.S. dental school or foreign equivalent
  • Eligibility for a Colorado dental license
  • At this rank applicants will usually have some teaching experience and will be expected to teach and/or provide clinical care.

Associate Professor:

  • A DDS/DMD degree from a CODA accredited U.S. dental school or foreign equivalent
  • Completion of an applicable Fellowship in Geriatrics or CODA approved Dental Specialty Residency
  • Eligibility for a Colorado dental license
  • At this rank applicants will have demonstrated considerable evidence of successful teaching and demonstrated leadership and service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some academic healthcare or governmentrelated experience
  • Previous academic experience teaching mentoring or precepting students
  • Evidence of advanced training in geriatric dentistry
  • A completed postdoctoral certificate program from a CODA approved dental specialty residency or a fellowship with an oral health emphasis.
  • Candidates with a graduate degree in public health (i.e. MPH MSPH or equivalent) or with an additional doctoral degree (e.g. DrPH or PhD) are encouraged to apply as well.
