Job Description

Compensation Type: Hourly

Compensation: $12.00

Job Summary

Purpose of Position:

Social Peer Assistants serve to support and encourage student success amongst the new student scholars in the Weiler Scholars (WSP) Scholars Program. Social Peer Assistants will be assigned scholars and connect weekly with them to help increase in them a sense of belonging and feel connected to the college. Through oneonone and small group interactions Social Peer Assistants will be knowledgeable guides for students and thoughtful facilitators who will provide access to the campus community campus resources and ultimately serve as a role model and advocate.

This position is open to students with or without Federal Work Study eligibility.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic guide to help Weiler Scholars (WS) succeed at Columbus State Community College
  • Develop and maintain relationships with and provide assistance and support for students (focus on a smooth transition acclimation and a sense of belonging)
  • Serve as a resource for students newer to the college
  • Help facilitate and encourage scholar attendance to all WSP programming
  • Participate in training programs and activities
  • Commit to connecting with your scholar(s) for a minimum of 2 hours each week
  • Plan engagement activities to do with your scholar(s)
  • Track activities and interactions.
  • Attend WSP programming
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Serve as a positive role model
  • Informs students about ways to engage in campus/college life.
  • Conducts outreach activities to promote resources and opportunities for support. Completes other projects to help with student success and retention including outbound calling to students to connect them to support services.
  • Educates students regarding college processes and services effective communication and other tips and tools for academic success
  • Increasing awareness of the Weiler Scholars Program at Columbus State
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Columbus State campus programs services and opportunities for student engagement. Must be interested in learning about college and community resources for referrals.

Skill in: Weiler Scholars Peer Asstants need to possess strong leadership abilities active listening and communication skills an aptitude for problem solving comfort with public speaking and the motivation to learn and help others in the Columbus State community.

Ability to: Operate a computer (including fundamental understanding of Microsoft Office). Must be able to navigate Facebook Instagram and confidentiality.

Minimum/General Qualifications:

This position requires that any applicant be enrolled as a current student at Columbus State in three or more credit hours in a degree or certificate seeking program. Visit for a full explanation of eligibility requirements for student employment at Columbus State.

OR

This position requires applicants to have Federal Work Study as part of their current Financial Aid package with Columbus State. You must also be enrolled in SIX or more credit hours in a degree or certificate program. Visit for a full explanation of eligibility requirements or visit Nestor Hall 113 to request Federal Work Study if you were not awarded it already. Any applicants without Federal Work Study eligibility will not be considered for this position.

Applicants must have received a high school diploma or a certificate of attendance from an accredited secondary school or a certificate of high school equivalence and be exempt from Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4109.

Must have reliable transportation or other means to get to work regularly.

Students enrolled as Transient College Credit Plus Undecided or otherwise nondegreeseeking are not considered eligible for Student Employment.

Students employed by Columbus State are exposed to professional work environments where they develop many of the important transferable skills necessary for future success in the workforce. CSTATE GROW (Guided Reflections on Work)

The program consists of brief structured conversations between supervisor and student to reflect on and integrate what they are learning. All student employees and their functional supervisors participate in this program during Autumn and Spring semesters.

Career and Leadership Development Program (CLDP)

The program consists of paid competencybased career and leadership development activities designed by Career Services. All Tier/Level III positions are automatically enrolled in this program.
