Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington Seattle invites outstanding faculty candidates to apply for a fulltime Assistant Professor or Associate Professor tenuretrack position. This position is on a 9month service period with an anticipated start date of September 16 2025.

This position focuses on advancing the research excellence in quantum information science and technology (QIST) at the University of Washington. The research areas for this position are defined very broadly and for this position in Mechanical Engineering there is a particular emphasis on the following areas: quantum control machine learning to optimize QIST systems quantum machine learning quantum optomechanics and quantum mechanical/acoustic systems.

The UW Mechanical Engineering Department has achieved national and international prominence in many research areas at the forefront of Mechanical Engineering Sciences such as advance composite materials physics and manufacturing additive and advanced manufacturing techniques biomechanics and biomedical engineering sciences physicsbased machine learning and artificial intelligence modeling and controls energy storage and electrification renewable energy robotics fluid mechanics and turbulence. This position will be expected to strengthen key areas and open new subfields with high promise at the national level or in collaboration with local industry.

The ME Department at the University of Washington is in a significant and sustained growth period and seeks to build on existing strengths while expanding its impact. This position will be expected to conduct research in any area of quantum information science and technology (QIST).

This position will be expected to conduct worldclass research and to innovate in quantumenabled technologies; to leverage the ME Departments and the Universitys competitive advantage in QIST to help launch multidisciplinary research efforts; to develop a high impact research program with national and international recognition and impact. This position will be expected to support the departments commitment to inclusion engage in excellent communication and fully engage audiences in higher education from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.Positive factors for consideration include but are not limited to excellence in research as clearly identified by a record of publication in archival journals and presentations at top international conferences regardless of the specific area of subspecialization.

The Mechanical Engineering departments research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering. The department currently has 39 fulltime tenured tenure track research and teaching faculty 700 undergraduates 250 masters students 150 PhD students and 30 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow. The base salary range for this position will be $11111$17000per month commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.



Applicants must have a PhD or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering Physics Applied Mathematics or related discipline by the date of appointment.

Candidates for an Associate Professor or Professor position must have created an internationally recognized extramurally funded research program.
