Position Announcement

Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music

Independence Community College (ICC) is seeking applications for the tenuretrack position of Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music. Independence Community College a small rural residential community college in southeast Kansas serves approximately 1000 full and parttime students each year. Position Summary

The Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music plays a key role in providing a wellrounded liberal arts education to students in Southeast Kansas. The position is responsible for performing a wide variety of duties including the following: leading instrumental ensembles specifically Athletic Band Concert Band and Jazz Band; teaching undergraduate music courses as part of both general education offerings and the established Associate of Arts in Music degree track; providing regular course assessment data and cocurricular ensembles; collaborating with Vocal Music and the Theatre Department; recruiting for scholarships within the Music Department and for Instrumental Music specifically to further grow the program; coordinating and conducting a minimum of two concerts per academic year; and other similar duties necessary to maintain and support instrumental music including budget management. Position requires flexible hours reflecting day evening and weekend rehearsal and performance opportunities.

Qualifications

Masters Degree in Music or a masters degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration. The applicants degree must be from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Preferred qualifications include two or more years of community college teaching experience high school teaching experience experience working in rural setting and experience with assessment.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of an Associate Professor of Instrumental Music. 1. Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds or more carrying supplies equipment.

2. This position requires the ability to sit or stand or walk for extended and various periods of time.

3. The ability to effectively learn new computer programs and applications as necessary; the ability to effectively troubleshoot changing computer software issues.

4. The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people with an excellent comprehension of the English language is essential.

5. Work is generally performed in an indoor setting in an office or a classroom as directed using commonly used technology and resources to facilitate instruction.

6. Provide own transportation to and from campus and appropriate licensing to operate college vehicles on recruiting trips.

Position Information

Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Musicis full time 9month tenuretrack faculty position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The instructor reports to the VP for Academic Affairs. Start date is early August 2025.

Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music

The Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music will be under the supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs as part of the Arts and Letters Division at Independence Community College. This position requires teaching conducting and recruiting for instrumental ensembles and will also help to fulfill the mission objectives and strategies of the College.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Teaching areas include but are not limited to: Music Appreciation Music Theory Applied Lessons (majors and nonmajors) Concert Band Jazz Band Athletic Band (drum line and stand band) and other courses based on credentials.

2. Performance responsibilities include: student recitals concerts and musical support for theatre productions.

3. Recruit students for the music program maintaining instrumental music library sound and associated music equipment.

4. Availability during posted office hours for student advisement and academic assistance. Encouraging student retention continuity progress in coursework and program and student success.

5. Responsible for working with other faculty on courselevel and program outcomes development implementation and reporting.

6. Work with other instructors and college personnel to promote ICC and the curricula offerings.

7. Fiscally responsible for assisting in budget development budget implementation and control necessary to deliver instructional programs in an efficient and effective manner to provide access and quality learning experiences.

8. Assist in development of new programming including funds development recruitment curriculum development and revision.

9. Maintain and enhance teaching excellence through ongoing professional development by participation through inservice training workshops seminars travel and publication.

10. Provide input in the colleges organizational shared governance structure through involvement in committees councils and supportive activities related to the development and enhancement of the college mission and strategies.

11. Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by being receptive to various learning modalities (e.g. online video accelerated and hybrid) found in the comprehensive community college setting.

12. Provide information and assist with external reporting for accreditation governmental and state agencies. Complete or provide requested input for reports for external agencies as required.

13. Work with the instructional team to provide outcomes assessment followup and improvement(s).

General Responsibilities

1. Complete reports and communications in a timely manner for internal and external agencies.

2. Maintain availability based on the needs of the academic division.

3. Ensure the security of all ICC property under the supervision of this role.

4. Illustrate clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications.

5. Exemplify the ability to work with a broad student population.

6. Communicate effectively with sensitivity to student learning styles and developmental needs.

7. Validate responsible work habits through collaborative and collegial social interactions.

8. Adhere to general rules of safety procedures and ethical job standards.

9. Present expertise in content area and keep abreast of advancements in the domain of instrumental music.

Qualifications

1. Masters Degree in Music or a masters degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration.

2. Computer skills related to instrumental music desirable.

3. An educational philosophy in alignment with a small rural comprehensive community college.

Compensation: $47800.00 $83300.00 per year

Independence Community College (ICC)is a twoyear educational institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It was established in 1925 as grades 13 and 14 of the Independencepublic school system. In 1967 Independence Community College legally separated from the school district. Construction of the new community college on a 68 acre campus formerly the Independence Country Club began in 1969. Classes at the new site began in September 1970. ICC campus is now home to the Academic Building Fine Arts Building Student Union Cessna Learning Center Field House Administration Building William Inge Center for the Artsfitness center athletic practice fields disc golf course 96bed multistructure living complex and a 200 bed residence hall.

By renovating a donated building in 2010 we expanded our college to include ICC West 2615 West Main Street). This campus is located on the west side of Independence and is home to our technical programs: Allied Health Cosmetology and GED/ renovations were completed in 2012 to accomodate our newest program Veterinary Technology. This stateoftheart facility includes animal wards a classroom lab surgery pharmacy prep roomsmall animal treatment food prep grooming and radiology.

ICC also maintains presence downtown through the ICC Foundation office and by partnering with the Independence Business Resource Center.

Currently our educational and support programming includes 35 programs of studyfor Associates of Arts and/or Science degrees 11 programs of study for Certificate completion Student Support Services Upward Bound mens and womens athletic programs and a variety of campus organizations and activities.
